Sony warns against using PS3 (Update: It’s Fixed!)
Update: PSN is now back up and running. The friends list is loading correctly and dynamic theme files are no longer corrupted. All is well so put that book down and get back to gaming.
As many of us know, PSN was crippled yesterday evening. It has left original PS3 models without access to the network and disables some games from playing at all. Sony believes it has identified the root of the problem and is working to find a fix. In the meantime Sony warns us not to use our PS3’s until further notice.
Sony has outlined the root of the problem as a bug in the clock functionality. The PlayStation Blog states this causes errors which include the following:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
Sony expects everything to be fixed within 24 hours but until then don’t turn on your PS3. Sony’s Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold writes,“We advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.”
We suggest reading a book for now.
