Important Importables
Jenni Lada brings us information about all of the groovy new gaming imports from around the world.
Electronic Arts is an industry giant as the dominant player in sports gaming, a role-playing leader thanks to its acquisition of Bioware and now it has set its sights on conquering the lucrative first-person shooter market. Here are the highlights from Electronic Arts’ 2010 media extravaganza:
Need for Speed:Hot Pursuit is the latest game in that storied franchise but the first in which Criterion, most famous for the Burnout racing games, has the keys to the car. It’s coming out Nov. 16, 2010 and will feature two separate career modes as a racer and a police officer. You will also be able to chase your friends down or lead the chase online.
Issac Clarke is back to fight more scary Necromorphs in Dead Space 2 , hitting shelves Jan. 25, 2011. While the first game was more about enclosed spaces, there were some really big creatures in this trailer. EA representatives restated their commitment to this franchise, a critical darling that hasn’t enjoyed huge sales.
EA wants to be tops in the FPS genre and thus they are taking Medal of Honor to modern day Afghanistan. It’s firing a full clip at you October 12, 2010. Also, EA now has a reward program for FPS fans called Gun Club. The first perk is early access to the Medal of Honor multiplayer beta beginning June 17, 2010. Non Gun Clubbers have to wait until until June 21.
Battlefield:Bad Company 2 is getting its first full-fledged expansion, taking place during the Vietnam Conflict, winter 2010.
Peter Moore announces three titles he calls gamechangers: Madden NFL 11, EA Sports MMA and EA Sports Active 2.
EA Sports MMA has a feature called EA Sports Live Broadcast that will allow players to upload trash talk videos and be discovered by EA Sports promoters. The ones chosen by promoters will get to play for real prizes and have actual sportscasters call their matches.
Gameflow is the talk of the Madden NFL 11 demo and football legend Joe Montana is on hand to talk about the realism of the feature. Moore said you will play a full game of Madden in half the time thanks to the AI coaching help you’ll get from Gameflow. Another new feature of Madden is 3-vs-3 co-op play online. It releases August 10, 2010.
EA Sports Active 2 will come with a new, improved heart monitor to tell you just how much of a workout you’re getting. This year it will be multiplatform and in a natural pairing it will work with Microsoft’s Kinect device. EA Sports Active 2 will be available on November 16, 2010.
Crysis 2 looks great and will be in 3D on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s coming this holiday season.
Cliffy B shows off Bulletstorm, a project Epic Games is working on with People Can Fly. This game is brutal, violent and vulgar with over-the-top skills and a wild sci-fi story. Looks like a winner to me. You can decide for yourself February 22, 2011.
The press conference closes with a very impressive trailer for Star Wars:The Old Republic. They’re going to keep closing with that game for as long as they can legally get away with it. We still don’t know when it’s coming out but we’re pumped.
