Apple’s App Store downloads top three billion

by Danielle Riendeau on Jan 7, 2010 at 12:28 PM

Holy Guacamole, Batman – the app store (which contains applications for apple’s mobile devices iPod Touch and the iPhone) has hit (and now exceeded) three billion downloads. That’s a whole hell of a lot of useful “there’s an app for that” programs and indie games, no?

    From Apple:

“‘Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months, this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before,’ said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. ‘The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.’”

Sure, most apps aren’t actually games, but there’s been such an explosion of independent (and even bigger-name) game development on the platform that it would be remiss not to mention it in a gaming blog. From Crayon Physics to Fieldrunners to Line Rider to Cube Runner, there’s plenty of innovation and fun available in tiny, touchable form. Congrats to Apple for releasing the proverbial beast that made it all possible.
