Gerard Way says “No way” to Umbrella Academy video game
I recently interviewed Gerard Way for an upcoming issue of Geek Monthly magazine. Way, known to many as the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, wrote the 6-issue comic book series Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite, currently available as a trade paperback by Dark Horse Comics ($17.95) and winner of three 2008 Eisner Awards for Best Limited Series (Way and Gabriel Ba), Coloring (Dave Stewart) and Cover Artist (James Jean).
Way is currently writing the second chapter in the series, coming out late 2008, and Universal Pictures has already optioned Umbrella Academy for a live-action feature film. But, as Way expressed in our interview, don’t expect to see a videogame based on his creation. At least, not one that he approves of…
Fight over Watchman heating up
If all that excitement over the recent Watchman trailer wasn’t enough for you, consider the legal drama over the film’s right to exist. Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox are locked in what could be a very bloody battle with the film (directed by Zack Snyder and set to release on March 6, 2009) at stake. Here’s the gist, minus the legal jargon: Fox is trying to get an injunction to bar the release of the flick, and Warner Bros. position is that they have no (legal) leg to stand on with their argument.
There’s a long history here, where Fox first sought rights to make a film out of the property, then abandoned the project. Sour grapes much? Maybe, but the movie business is about as cutthroat as it gets. ICV2 is reporting on the ongoing feud, which they speculate may end in a deal with Fox to get a share of the sure-to-be-huge profits. After all, everyone and their dog was excited by the trailer, and comic book movies are huge right now (box office gold, anyone?).

Warner Bros. making episodic Watchmen game
The upcoming graphic novel turned film The Watchmen will also be made into a videogame in 2009. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced July 24,2008, that the game will be based on the movie with an emphasis on the character personalities. Warner Bros. promises The Watchmen videogame will be an episodic experience available on Playstation Network, Xbox Live and PC.
Warner Bros. is taking a slightly different approach to producing a videogame tie-in to a movie. Given that history of movie-based games as being, well, less than stellar, Warner Bros. has decided to release at least two…
First look at Watchmen
2007 saw one of the best comic book movies of all time released, that being Frank Millar’s 300 which would go on to gross over $450 million worldwide. 300 was only the second motion picture to be directed by Zack Snyder who, after 300 and Dawn of the Dead (Snyder’s first film), would essentially be allowed to sign his own check. That was pretty much what he did with his biggest project, the highly acclaimed-award winning comic book Watchmen, which Snyder has wanted to turn into a film for quite some time.
A full year ahead of Watchmen(s) scheduled March 6, 2009 ,release date, Snyder has revealed the official Watchmen movie website as well as a first look at five of the film’s staring heroes: The Comedian, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach and Silk Spectre…
