Rant: Stop blaming, banning videogames for real-world violence

by Jonathan Gronli on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:09 AM

GTA IV cab
Grand Theft Auto IV was recently removed from store shelves in Thailand by the order of New Era Interactive, one of Asia’s largest game distributors. The reason is that Polwat Chino, a 19-year-old boy, killed a taxi driver while trying to recreate a scene from the game.

Ah. Yet another case of “life imitating art.“ Remember the problem though. Before games, movies and any violent media, there was still violence. So, in comes the obvious step of scapegoating. The easiest thing the blame is something that really can’t defend itself. It’s the basic psychology of blame. Since the Columbine school shooting, the popular thing to blame for violence has been videogames.

We are in an age where one of crime’s biggest motives and accusations is…

Take-Two press conference recap

by Kenneth on Jul 16, 2008 at 02:58 PM

gamertell take-two logo Take- Two’s press conference (10:45 a.m. PT, July 16, 2008) was shaping up to be an exciting start to day three of E3 considering they weren’t going to talk about a movie for an hour (I’m looking at you Capcom).  With the announcement of the Grand Theft Auto series coming to the Nintendo DS, it seemed as though Take-Two would have more information unveil about this and maybe some other games that are under development for the company.

All-in-all the conference ended up being a yawn fest.  Some of the highlights from the show included the kid friendly Dora the Explorer games and new clips surrounding 2K’s NBA and NHL franchises.

Take-Two fights back after GTA IV ads pulled

by Andrew Webster on May 7, 2008 at 08:39 PM

GTA IV AdRockstar’s recently released epic, Grand Theft Auto IV, has been on the receiving end of a great deal of controversy for quite a while but parent company Take-Two Interactive is finally fighting back.

Take-Two is suing the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) for pulling all GTA IV related ads from buses and transit displays throughout the city just days after they were put up on April 22.  The ad campaign was supposed to last for six weeks.

Take-Two claims that by…

GTA may have changed real-world gang structure

by Neil Barbour on May 5, 2008 at 03:33 PM

GTYAY While the streets might be safe for a few weeks while everyone is inside playing Grand Theft Auto IV: Vice City, it’s only a matter of time before hooligans decide to stretch their thumbs and break out of the family den or dilapidated tenement apartment (adorned with a 42 in. LCD screen cranked up to 1080p, natch).

This is the fourth time a GTA has cracked the skulls of our law- and god-fearing youth, and it’s hard not to see its influence everywhere. Take this piece in the Sunday New York Times Magazine about a group of former gang members who try to head off attempts at gangland shooting violence…

Unexpectedly anticipating Grand Theft Auto IV

by Christopher Buckner on Apr 21, 2008 at 02:47 PM

grand theft auto 4I have never really been a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series. While I have played most of the past installments, I have never been able to get past the bad stories, horrible AI, poor graphics and the fact that Rockstar releases a game so full of bugs that, at times, it is impossible to play, most of all San Andreas if you are playing it on the PS2.

In recent weeks, however, I have been eagerly awaiting the latest game in the series to make its next-gen debut.

Due to be released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on April 29, 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV will take fans back to Liberty City, but don’t expect this most recent game in the incredibility successful series to be everything you remember. Expect much more…

EA amends takeover offer, extends deadline by one week

by Pulkit Chandna on Mar 31, 2008 at 07:18 AM

EA logoWith Take Two’s board rejecting EA’s takeover offer, EA has softened its stand, though only a bit. It had previously set April 11, 2008, as the deadline but has deferred it by a week and reset it to April 18, 2008. Despite the extension, it still is keen to close the deal before the April 29, 2008, release of GTA IV. It has also amended its takeover proposal, which was coming after Take Two adopted the Shareholders Rights Agreement.

The most important amendment is regarding the shareholders rights agreement and it reads, “either (1) that Take-Two’s Board of Directors redeem the preferred stock purchase rights issued as a result of Take-Two’s adoption on March 24, 2008 of the stockholder rights plan, or (2) that EA be satisfied that such rights have been invalidated or are otherwise inapplicable to its acquisition of Take-Two.“ EA feels that its $26 per share is fair and not undervalued. It also feels that this is the best offer for the Take Two shareholders.

Take Two board rejects EA’s offer, mergers before GTA IV release

by Pulkit Chandna on Mar 29, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Take TwoThe board of directors of Take-Two has once again dismissed EA’s offer and termed it “inadequate in multiple respects.” But it remains open to other possibilities like a merger with a third party or EA. It has advised the company’s shareholders not to offer their shares to EA.

The board has ruled out the possibility of any mergers before the release of GTA IV (April 29, 2008). However, before the game’s release, it is ready to…

EA's takeover bidEA has decided the best way to preserve its ascendancy by making a big acquisition - or, at least, try to. Take-Two receives a Wells notice from SEC

by PJ Hruschak on Aug 16, 2007 at 09:22 PM

gamertell take-two logo Poor, naughty Take-Two. The game company that gamers love and everyone else loves to hate has been served with a Wells notice by the SEC. That basically means T2 has an opportunity to try and convince the US Securities and Exchange Commission to not file charges against for previous stock practices.

T2 received the notice on August 9, 2007, months after T2 announced in April 2007 that it was being investigated by the SEC. GameDaily points out that Take-Two’s stock has fallen 32 percent in the last three months, certainly as a result of the shareholder coup, the Manhunt 2 international controversies and the delayed release of Grand Theft Auto IV.

From the SEC filing, T2 indicated it expects “to resolve this investigation by means of a settlement rather than a contested litigation of charges ... the ‘Wells’ call represents a significant step forward towards that resolution.“
