Tim Schafer, the creator of games including Psychonauts and Grim Fandango, is coming up with a game that plays a tribute to heavy metal music in all its loud and medieval glory.

The game is called Brütal Legend and it puts players in the role of Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a heavy metal band that gets transported to another world with the aid of a cursed belt buckle. This world is a twisted reflection of all aspects of heavy metal from album covers to groupies but although this may sound like a great place it has one major problem, the place is run by demons that have enslaved mankind. When Eddie gets there he is greeted like a hero and as mankind’s only chance so armed with a magic axe and the power of heavy metal, Eddie will gather an army made up of headbangers, bouncers and groupies among others and battle the demons for freedom.

The game will feature an open-world environment with many locations based on the covers of heavy metal albums so fans will be pleased to look around and find their favorite. Brütal Legend is a third person action adventure title and its soundtrack will include original recordings by heavy metal bands. The main character will be voiced by Jack Black (from Tenacious D) and heavy metal icons like Ronnie James Dio and Lemmy Kilmister will also provide their voices for in-game characters.

Schafer’s games have been really good in the past so if he can pull this one off we can expect a great adventure. The heavy metal aspects sound like they will be really fun and they will surely bring a twist that hasn’t been exploited before.

The game is still in production and it will be released for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, although no official date has been announced.
