Nintendo’s most embarrassing moments at E3 2008

by Danielle Riendeau on Jul 20, 2008 at 08:16 AM

Nintendo E3 2008
Did you watch Nintendo’s E3 conference? Then you probably cringed a few times. The Minus World has an awesome list of the top five most embarrassing moment’s of Nintendo’s press event, including Cammie Dunaway’s tales of snowboarding woe and the awkward moments of silence from the crowd at each “big announcement”. The funniest of the moments happens at number two, aptly titled: “Nobody Knew How To Actually Control Anything”:

“Reggie demoed a jet ski mini game by waving his arms wildly and erratically steering like a kamikaze alcoholic stunt car driver and we were left more confused than informed. Next time hire somebody who actually plays video games to, you know, actually play your video game.”

Nice. I have to say, I thought the most embarrassing moment was Reggie’s statement that he was “The Regginator” but I suppose that was funny (or crazy) enough to qualify as “awesome” instead of ‘embarrassing”. Oh well. Check out the list for the rest - with a few wonderful pictures to illustrate the hilarity.

A few games dominated the month, especially Lego Indiana Jones, which took four of the top 20 sales spots. Likewise, Guitar Hero titles took four spots (Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was three of them). Topping the chart was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PS3 at 774,600 units (not including games bundled with a system). May 2008’s top game, Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360, dropped down to 11th and its partner release, GTA4 for PS3, came in 19th after being fourth the previous month. Thirteen of the top 20 selling games in June were released that month.

The oldest game on the list is…

Kirby Super Star Ultra update from E3 2008

by Jeremy Hill on Jul 18, 2008 at 03:01 PM

Kirby Super Star UltraKirby was not forgotten during E3 2008. Our favorite pink eating machine will be featured in a remake of the SNES title Kirby Super Star for the Nintendo DS called Kirby Super Star Ultra. The game will be released on September 22, 2008, and will feature everything we remember in the original plus updated graphics, fully rendered cut scenes, multiplayer and some DS-influenced mini games.

The basic gameplay in Kirby Super Star Ultra has Kirby going from one end of the stage to the other while absorbing different abilities from enemies. If you don’t feel like eating them you call always…

During last night’s E3 2008 Nintendo Developer Roundtable where games like Animal Crossing, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort were being presented, a sudden and off-topic question informed all of the return of a familiar title.  During the presentation, an audience member had to have his or her Pikmin fix, and asked if another game would eventually be made.  To the surprise of many, Shigeru Miyamoto, casually confirmed that a new Pikmin game is being made…

It’s nice to see the DS-Wii connectivity feature being put to good use. Nintendo revealed at the E3 2008 Nintendo Developers’ Roundtable that Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk will be compatible. Players with both games will be able to transfer their characters and possessions to the Wii version of the game, if they so desire.

Nintendo Everything reports that it may be possible for Wii owners without Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to still send their characters to friends’ Animal Crossing: City Folk towns. Allegedly, people will be able to use DS units and Animal Crossing: Wild World to transfer Animal Crossing: City Folk data to a friend’s Wii.

Rhythm Tengoku Gold transforms to Rhythm Heaven at E3

by Jenni Lada on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Rhythm Heaven screenshot screen shot Rhythm Tengoku Gold
I bet all those North Americans who preordered Rhythm Tengoku Gold at Play-Asia or a similar site feel sorry now - Nintendo announced at E3 2008 that the music game similar to WarioWare will be released in North America as Rhythm Heaven. Like its GBA predecessor Rhythm Tengoku (which was never released stateside), Rhythm Heaven involves going through assorted mini-games, tapping their stylus or finger on the touch screen to the beat.

The fun part about Rhythm Heaven is that you won’t be prompted to tap by some flashing icon on the screen. Instead you have to pay attention to the music, created by Tsunku, and keep up the beat on the touch screen.

Recapping Nintendo’s E3 2008 press event

by Danielle Riendeau on Jul 15, 2008 at 09:14 PM

Wii Music
In keeping with the overall theme of E3 2008, Nintendo’s press event was a little on the anticlimactic side. We had the usual “everyone’s a gamer” shtick, plenty of impressive sales charts, a few embarrassingly wacky Wii game demos, and a couple of big-ish announcements - so it was quite a bit like last year’s show, really. I’m going to give the whole event the “good, bad, ugly” treatment and highlight the biggest news of the show. Be sure to check out the live blog for the whole shebang.

The Good:
The official announcement of Animal Crossing: CityFolk looked impressive, with it’s Wiispeak communication system and ”Animal Crossing on steroids” approach. Also announced was the shocker of the show - a Grand Theft Auto game for the DS, a very fun-looking Wii Sports sequel (Wii Sports: Resort), and a demo for the very fun (if simple)-looking Wii Music. The big N showed off a few decent-looking third party titles in Call of Duty: World At War, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (all for Wii) and Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades and Spore: Creatures for the DS. We also got a look at the new Wii motion plus device, and Cammie Dunaway hinted at some very interesting DS functionality that has serious potential.

The Bad:
What was with all the lame teasing?
