Nintendo to host “mystery party”

by Danielle Riendeau on Aug 21, 2008 at 06:47 PM

Mystery Case Files
Nintendo has just announced it will be hosting a “mystery party” at its world store in NYC. On September 6, 2008, a kid-friendly scavenger-hunt-ish party will go down at the Rockefeller plaza store. It’s all in honor of the release of Mystery Case Files:MillionHeir, ("the new seek-and-solve game for Nintendo DS"), and will involve clues, puzzles and prizes. There will also be food, drinks and game kiosks and the opportunity to participate in a “live interactive performance with characters from the game” - whatever that means.

The best part? The press release says the party is for “Kids, parents, teens, enthusiastic gamers, curious consumers and mystery buffs of all backgrounds”. I can just picture a few 20-30 something rabid Nintendo fans pushing the 5-year-olds around. Then again, that’s not a very nice image. Mystery Case Files:MillionHeir is due out on September 8, 2008, whether you go to the party or not.

Sega announces House of Dead: Overkill as Wii exclusive

by Kirk Hiner on Aug 20, 2008 at 05:16 PM

House of the Dead: OverkillWii gamers who find themselves defending the system as a legitimate platform for hardcore gamers have been given some new ammunition (of course, they may want to save that ammunition for the zombies). Sega has announced The House of Dead: Overkill will be coming to the Wii early 2009. The game is being developed by Headstrong Games (formerly Kuju of Battalion Wars 1 and 2) and is being built from the ground up specifically for the Wii platform.

Using the Wii remote (as opposed to the light-gun approach of the The House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return port), the game will be presented in a pulp action-style design. This is made quite clear in the trailer which was instantly one of the best game trailers I have ever seen. Click through to check it out…

Chrono Trigger comes to Nintendo DS on November 25 2008

by Danielle Riendeau on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:22 PM

Chrono Trigger
Set your watches, countdown clocks or any other timepieces you may have - beloved RPG Chrono Trigger is coming to the Nintendo DS on November 25, 2008. The time-traveling favorite game will come loaded with new dungeons and an “Arena Mode” to complement the classic gameplay. The title will make use of the DS’ two screens, and Square Enix is promising an entirely faithful port.

The press release is full of hyperbole and name-dropping, but this game is one of those rare cases where all of the praise is actually deserved. It’s many a gamer’s favorite RPG, if not their favorite game period. It took the SNES RPG template and made it more colorful; made the combat quicker, more interactive and more fun; and actually had an awesome, millennium-spanning storyline. Not to mention, the graphics and music are still regarded among the finest examples of the era.

I remember playing this game in 2000, way after it’s original release, and it was actually my very first RPG. You can bet I’ll be in line this November.

Rumor:  Upcoming Tony Hawk DS game might utilize motion controls

by Mark Rollins on Aug 18, 2008 at 02:41 PM

Tony Hawk DS Game Motion Control
I don’t know how exactly many Tony Hawk games there are right now but I’m guessing he’s just barely trailing Mario.  I’m kidding, of course, but there is a rumor going around that the latest Tony Hawk game will have something that no other game has before.

Like all rumors, we have very little verifiable information.  We do know that this latest game, Tony Hawk’s Motion, is going to be for the Nintendo DS and have some new sort of motion controlling technology…

Is that a WiiLaptop!? My bad, it’s just a Wii with a screen

by Mark Rollins on Aug 15, 2008 at 10:06 AM

Portable Wii Screen
With the recent trio of Sony product mods making web waves (PS3 laptop, PSP with touchscreen and PSP Phone), the thought of a Wii laptop is pretty exciting.

I would love to play the Wii on the road like Visteon’s GBA dockable entertainment system. Although it might not be a complete “dockable entertainment system,” a portable screen attachment sure makes it look like one.

Currently available through ThinkGeek for $110, the Wii Portable 16:9 LCD Screen allows you to…

Nintendo Pokemon DS Lite Dialga Palkia Limited Edition Pokemon PackJapan isn’t the only country receiving exceptionally pretty, limited run DSes. Nintendo has just announced that, on August 17, 2008, a Limited Edition DS Pokemon Pack will be available in stores. The pack includes an etched, black DS lite and additional Pokemon items for $129.99.

The selling point of the package is the black DS lite with pictures Dialga and Palkia, two legendary pokemon from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl etched on the front of it. It also comes with a matching DS lite case that has the same design on the cover, a mini poster and a DVD with an animated movie called Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. Japanese Import: Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo for DS

by Janine Dong on Aug 9, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo CoverReleased on July 31, 2008, SNK Playmore’s Nintendo DS game Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo (DDMS2) stars middle school student and resident bad-boy, Akuji Nishimura, who returns as the now infamous girl groper witch hunter with a mission. Watch out girls (and boys - he discriminates not). With such a racy theme, it’s pretty safe to say that this title won’t make it outside of Japan.

While this game may look very cute, fluffy and, most of all, bouncy, it is very text-heavy. Those unfamiliar with Japanese kanji may feel a little intimidated but it would definitely help someone to practice determination, discipline and tenacity, all very admirable qualities. Since there is…

An open letter to Nintendo about Wii Sports Bowling

by JG Mason on Aug 7, 2008 at 02:34 PM

JG Mii image
Domo Arigato Nintendo,

I want to personally thank you for your ingenious Wii game console. I recently purchased one for my family and wanted to provide you with the feedback only the proud Dad of a 5-year-old can give.

#$%$% you.

Let me describe for you the feeling of being beat being humiliated by someone 1/15th my weight, who has no practical real-world experience, no knowledge of physics, trig or geometry and no checking account. It hurts, bad…
