The slightly inappropriate Old Man Game demo drops

by Jenni Lada on Nov 11, 2008 at 12:18 PM

The Old Man Game Paul DavisPaul Davis, independent game developer, has just released a free PC demo of his sidescrolling action title The Old Man Game. It features a silly background story, incredibly detailed character sprites, seven levels to explore and a compact download (3.6mb). Did I mention it is free? Okay, good. It sounds a little like Metal Slug to me, since the old man has to save female hostages while also journeying through CORP LAB to take down Dr. Butt-head and his troops.

An interesting bit of background surrounds The Old Man Game. It was originally a GameBoy Advance homebrew demo. In fact, the official The Old Man Game site has a page devoted to the original GBA version of the game, and even has a download link in case people want to try playing it on an emulator…

Guide Archie through Archibald’s Adventures

by Jenni Lada on Sep 2, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Archibald's Adventures screenshotIndependent games are always worth a peek, as you never know if the studio making them is going to be huge someday. Rake In Grass has just released a new action/puzzle game for Mac and PC users called Archibald’s Adventures. Its your standard “get from point A to B without dying” sort of game, with 114 unique levels, and it looks like the kind of title retro game fans will enjoy.

See, Archie and Professor Klumpfus (a mad scientist who doesn’t seem like all that bad a guy), are stuck in the Professor’s mansion. Apparently, Klumpfus wasn’t top of the class at Mad Scientist U., as he messed up an experiment. All the lifeforms he was working on escaped and his security system has buckled down. It’s up to Archie to get through all of the levels of Archibald’s Adventures and set them both free.

Click through to watch a video of Archibald’s Adventures‘ tenth level - “Night with the Tentacles” (which looks, surprisingly, tentacle-free)...

Gamertell Review: Gamers on DVD

by PJ Hruschak on May 28, 2008 at 06:27 PM

gamertell gamers the movie dvd box artTitle: Gamers (aka Gamers: The Movie)
Price: $24.95 (DVD)
Release Date: May 6, 2008
Distributer: Monterey Media, Inc.
Rating: Unrated
Pros: A good mix of both subtle and outrageous humor with engaging characters. Surprisingly well made and funny or an indie film produced in six days.
Cons: Starts a little sluggish and goes a little odd with a couple gags.
Overall Score: Two thumbs up; 90/100; A-; * * * * out of five

Screw the lame-ass box art. Gamers is a great indie flick that will make anyone who has ever rolled something other than a 6-sided die snarf milk all over their mother’s teak coffee table.

Profile: Indie tabletop game company, Creative Mountain Games

by Jonathan Gronli on May 20, 2008 at 06:14 PM

The banner and motto of a little known Indie tabletop publication company
Creative Mountain Games is a hidden gem of tabletop gaming resources.

The site and company is run by a friend I made through Northeastern Illinois University while working at its student newspaper the Independent. Mark Clover, the head of Creative Mountain Games, is a gamer at heart. His love of tabletop games is part of the reason he started up the indie publishing company with the philosophy, “We do the work, so you can play!“

The company currently has 17 products at EN World PDF Store and RPGNow with more in development. Products that are developed are one-shot scenarios and full-length campaigns. The formats and rules are adaptable to…
