by Jenni Lada on Oct 16, 2008 at 07:24 AM

Mabinogi speaking with Nao
Mabinogi doesn’t offer any in-your-face or lengthy tutorials when you first begin playing. Instead, you receive a spirit weapon which will answer any questions you have while playing, and owls will deliver scrolls with quests to your. So people familiar with RPGs or MMOs shouldn’t have any problems jumping right in.

Those who are new to the genre may need a bit help to get started. So to help you out, Gamertell has gone through the beginning of the game, to help you get accustomed and settled in, until you receive your first title. The game’s “tutorial” section can be described as consisting of five quests which send you around Tir Chonaill, performing basic tasks for people, learning a few skills and meeting some of the residents…

How To: Create a Japanese Playstation Store account

by Jenni Lada on Oct 3, 2008 at 09:49 AM

PlayStation Store logoWell, it happened. PlayStation Portable demos from the Japanese PlayStation Store are now exactly like domestic demos. This means there’s a copyright signature, where you have to sign into the store and download it directly to your PSP or it won’t work.

So you can’t just go to the ever so wonderful and convenient PSP Fanboy demo page and download demos of Prinny: Ore ga Shujinkou de Iinsuka? (aka Prinny: Is it okay if I’m the hero?) or Yggdra Union.

The time has come to provide for yourself when it comes to new Japanese game demos. You need to set up a Japanese Playstation Store account and here’s how…

How To: Make Torneko a master merchant in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

by Jenni Lada on Sep 22, 2008 at 02:16 PM

Torneko Taloon Dragon Quest IV DQIV screenshot“Chapter 3: Torneko and the Extravagant Excavation” in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is quite possibly the most tricky and intriguing segment, because it doesn’t involve winning a tournament, rescuing people or defeating a villain. Instead, you help Torneko Taloon become a successful merchant.

You help him find a rare steal strongbox that will allow him to travel without worrying about losing money, find a shop and clear a trade route. This means that the main goal in Torneko’s adventure is to earn money and find items. Its a refreshing change and the most entertaining of the early chapters.

Torneko’s chapter begins in his hometown of Lakanaba, where he lives with his wife and son and works at a local weapon’s shop. The first two days of the game involve Torneko walking to work, waiting on adventurers and then heading home again. Depending on how you…

Books about gamers for librarians, teachers

by Lucy Newman on Sep 9, 2008 at 06:27 PM

Videogames finding their way into the libraryIn the Los Angeles Times, writer Alex Pham reports that the San Fernando Library encourages youth to play video games and even invites them to be as loud as they like.

“It lets teens be more comfortable with the library and become familiar with librarians,” San Fernando librarian Lydia Harlan told Pham. “And it’s what kids are into these days.”

In the article, Pham reports that more libraries are turning to video games to connect with technologically savvy youth who might be losing interest in books and stories. In New York, the New York Public Library has even added a collection of books, films, music and maps about video games.

Basic back-to-school guide for gamers

by Danielle Riendeau on Aug 27, 2008 at 06:49 PM

Pencil
It’s that time of year again.  The air’s getting crisp, the leaves will soon be changing and millions of kids, teens, twenty-somethings and beyond face that crushing end to freedom known as “back to school time”. Fear not, gamers. I’ve compiled a list of things you can do to enjoy gaming and survive school in harmony. Think of it as a survival guide.

1. Pack your DS with brain-trainers.

So maybe you slacked off on your Spanish lessons over summer vacation. Or you’ve forgotten how to do long division. Don’t worry, since the DS has more edutainment/educational software that you can shake a no. 2 pencil at. From purely educational software like My Word Coach and My Spanish Coach, to the more game-ish antics of Brain Training, and Big Brain Academy, you’ll be much more apt to ace that pop quiz. Just don’t play it when the…

Important Importables: Organizing Jump Ultimate Stars anime inspired decks

by Jenni Lada on Jul 25, 2008 at 07:43 AM

Important Importables logo
Jump Ultimate Stars boxart The DS game Jump Ultimate Stars is quite an elaborate fighting game. After all, 300 characters from 40 different manga series appear in the game either as fighters or support characters. With all of those options, creating a deck can be a daunting feat - especially if you’re a beginner and you don’t speak Japanese.

So today in Important Importables, we are going to offer a few Jump Ultimate Stars theme deck suggestions. Since even that could get a bit long (there are loads of possible creation options and everyone’s fighting style may vary), we’re going to focus on three anime series - Bleach, Naruto and One Piece.

Testing tracks for Tune Troopers

by Jenni Lada on Jul 11, 2008 at 07:24 PM

Song Summoner The Unsung Heroes screen shot Hip-O-DromeSquare Enix’s recent iPod release, Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes requires a lot of patience. Not because it is a strategic RPG, mind you, but because you’ll have to sift through quite a few songs in the Hip-O-Drome before you find some truly worthy Tune Troopers that can be used in battle.

I spent over an hour yesterday, just testing tracks in the game and seeing what would come from them. At one point, I abandoned logical assessment (15 minutes in), and decided to just have fun with it. The result was a selection of popular, video game related and obscure tracks being plugged in to see what came out. Would a “One Winged Angel” trooper trump an “Aerith’s Theme?“ How would a classic track, like “Bohemian Rhapsody,“ fare against a top 10 pop hit like “Bleeding Love?“ Would other Square Enix songs, or other video game songs in general, create stronger warriors? I tested it so you don’t have to.

Since the creation guidelines aren’t clear yet, I’m not sure if others will get the same results. So I’m including all the information about the tracks I plugged in, in case song length, my rating of the song or how I sorted it effects the resulting Tune Trooper.

Four quick tips for sturdy Tune Troopers in Song Summoner for iPod

by Jenni Lada on Jul 11, 2008 at 09:22 AM

Song Summoner The Unsung Heroes screen shot title screenI’ve owned Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes for less than a day and already I am developing an unhealthy obsession for the Square Enix’s strategic RPG created exclusively for the iPod.

This isn’t enough time to craft a full-on review (that will come in a day or two) but an hour crafting Tune Troopers and a few hours of playing have provided me with a rudimentary education. I’ve learned a few tricks while playing which have been helpful in crafting a solid foundation for troop formation.

So the following are a few tricks to help you in creating your first few Tune Troopers and earning “S” ranks for your first battles…

Etrian Odyssey II parties with potential

by Jenni Lada on Jun 24, 2008 at 03:46 PM

a screen shot from Etrian Odyssey IIEtrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard gives fans of the original Etrian Odyssey exactly what they want - more. More mapping tools, more character classes, more enemies, more quests, more equipment - you get the idea.

In doing so, some things were also altered. Classes from Etrian Odyssey may not have the same skills or abilities in Etrian Odyssey II, forcing players to rethink parties that may have worked in the previous entry. So after a bit of research and experimentation, Gamertell came up with five potential parties that might be great for exploring the dungeon.
