GDC 2008 breaks attendance records

Need more proof that the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) is becoming the new E3? Look no further than the attendance numbers for the once-intimate conference: GameDaily is reporting that over 18,000 people attended the five-day event. This breaks the event’s previous attendance record, setting the bar even higher for next year’s iteration (which is set for March 23-27, 2009 in San Francisco).

It seems that in the wake of the “reimagined” E3, all the other major conferences (GDC, PAX, TGS, D.I.C.E etc.) are growing and filling the void of the once-mighty show. However, as noted in an earlier story, the directors behind GDC and D.I.C.E. are looking for ways to trim the proverbial fat from their shows. It’ll be interesting to see if the trend continues into 2009.

Xbox Live’s Arcade has been one of the providers of tiny games that get you and all your friends buzzing for a week and a half. Sony, Vivox combine to offer in-game voice chat

Sony Online EntertainmentJust a few days ago, in-game community tool provider, PlayXpert, announced its parntership with Vivox to provide in-game voice communication features to its users. It appears that Vivox’s voice technologies are in great demand in the Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) industry, as leading MMOG publisher Sony Online Entertainment has also chartered Vivox’s technologies for its games.

Microsoft has had a forgettable start to the year with the Xbox 360 finishing third for the first time on US sales charts in January 2008. Nintendo’s showing at GDC 2008

Nintendo’s biggest announcements at GDC 2008 have included dates for the company’s next big things, including WiiWare. The Big N named May 12, 2008 as the roll out date for WiiWare, a downloadable content service for the Wii that will allow gamers to purchase fresh new content (and gives indie developers a chance to tap into the huge Wii market). Exactly a week later (May 19, 2008) Wii Fit and it’s infamous peripheral, the Wii Balance Board, will launch. And the company made mention of hotly anticipated Wii title Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is still on target for a March 9, 2008 release.
