Three expansions coming to Final Fantasy XI in 2009

Final Fantasy XI Crystalline ProphecyPlayers of that often forgotten MMO Final Fantasy XI will get to look forward to not one but three expansions in 2009, with the first one being released in Spring 2009 and,  according to the Square-Enix blog, additional expansions coming “every few months.“ The expansions will cost around $10.00 each and will be distributed digitally on the PlayOnline Viewer.

The Lord of the Rings Online expands into Mines of Moria

Mines of MoriaThe Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (LotRO) received its first official expansion pack today (November 18, 2008) in the form of Mines of Moria. Now available across both Europe and North America for Windows PCs, the expansion boasts large dwarven environments to explore as well as several additional updates to the core game.

As seen in the Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Moria – or Khazad-dûm to give it its dwarven name – is a massive underground complex located underneath the Misty Mountains of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. In the LotRO expansion it will play host to hundreds of new quests to complete and foes to battle.

Free Spore Patch 3 adds 24 limbs

spore screen shot limbsIn celebration of the release of the Creepy & Cute Parts Pack expansion for Spore, EA has thrown players 24 new exoskeleton limbs to toy with.

The patch containing the new parts can be downloaded via the EA Download Manager and from EA’s web site. The patch is available for both PC and Mac.

The $19.99 Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack is now available in stores and ready to make your Spore or Spore Creature Creator creations even cuter or creepier.

The Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack does contain some nice extras. For example, there are exactly 108 new creation options - 60 new creepy and cute parts that can be added onto a creature to make them more endearing or terrifying and 48 new paint options so you have more control over the shades and color schemes for your characters. The expansion also comes with 24 extra animations, so your characters will be able to move in new ways. None of these extras are “essential,“ but if you’re starting to get tired of the game, it might help rejuvenate your interest…

Swedish teen suffers seizure after 24-hour World of Warcraft: Lich King marathon

lich kingWorld of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King has been out for less than a week and it seems the expansion has already claimed its first official casualty.

Right off the heels of a European gamer reaching level 80 in Wrath of the Lich King in 27 hours, Kotaku reports that a 15-year-old boy from Sweden suffered an epileptic seizure after playing Wrath of the Lich King for 24 hours straight.

Expand Company of Heroes with Tales of Valor

Company of HeroesTHQ has announced that another Company of Heroes expansion is on its way. Dubbed Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, the product will be a standalone expansion developed by Relic Entertainment and will feature a slew of new content including three campaigns, multiplayer modes and a “direct-fire” feature.

Unfortunately, no other information was given on any of the modes or campaigns, not even a price. The release window is Spring 2009, however, so we should be hearing more on this soon. Though, as Joystiq points out, Amazon does mention the game’s release date as March 9, 2009, with a $30 price tag. But, again…

Konami launching Commemorative Campaign (read: free stuff) for Metal Gear Online

Been playing some Metal Gear Online lately? Probably not but if you do have an account you might want to log in November 25, 2008, through December 9, 2008, as Konami will be giving all players who log into their Metal Gear Online accounts 10,000 reward points that they can use to spruce up those dusty characters at in the game’s shop.

It’s just one part of Konami’s “Commemorative Campaign” for its online war game, which is a celebration of achieving over one million members. The catch is that the points won’t be awarded until after December 9,  2008.

Pinball FX’s Street Fighter II Turbo table coming November 12

The Xbox Live Arcade game Pinball FX is expanding with a fourth, Street Fighter II Turbo-themed table. That’s right, ZEN Studios, developers of Pinball FX, has worked with Capcom to create a table completely inspired by Street Fighter. It will be available November 12, 2008, and sounds really cool.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the table has a gorgeous background featuring Street Fighter II Turbo characters. But that’s only the start of the Street Fighter-infused goodness…

Valve clarifies Xbox Live’s Portal expansion

Reports last month of additional content to paradigm-busting, platitude-eliciting puzzler Portal were heart-stopping revelations for die-hards Valve fans.

But, according to GameSetWatch, Valve’s Doug Lombardi said the new levels for Portal will be culled from the Portal: The Flash Game map pack. While there’s still plenty of reasons for console players to be happy, there are now a few to get riled up about, too…
