US troops to hold first game con in combat zone and you can help

by Nathan McMahon on May 25, 2007 at 06:22 PM

As a former Marine, I understand the inherit tediousness and boredom that comes from a long deployment. Often the days drag on as you wait for something interesting to happen. Well, some enterprising young servicemen and women have decided to take things into their own hands.

Following in the footsteps of everyone’s favorite console FPS (Halo), they have decided to hold an RPG convention. Ziggurat Con, as it is called, is being held from 1200 to 2100 hours on on June 9, 2007, at Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase (that’s Noon to 9 p.m. for you laymen out there) and is open to all military and civilian contractors.

One of the biggest problems for these guys is that they are in short supply of materials needed to play. That’s where you, the faithful reader come into play. Check out the Toys4Troops site where all of the details on how to donate are included.

So, regardless of you political affiliations or how you feel about the current conflict, help the guys out who help us enjoy our day to day lives.

GDC organizers announce two new events

by Jeff Edwards on May 24, 2007 at 08:21 PM

CMP Media, responsible for organizing the Game Developers Conference each year, has been busy adapting to the changing global climate of game development.  Just this week, two new events have been announced: GDC China and PC GameOn.

Taking its show to the Far East, CMP Media will hold the first annual GDC China in August 2007, which promises to be the same event in spirit though tailored to the unique demands and interests of the Chinese game development community.  China is one of the world’s fastest growing game markets and the program is promising content for the native Chinese developers as well as international developers interested in opening in, moving to, hiring from, or outsourcing to China.

While announcing publicly no intention to turn the GDC into the glitzy media frenzy that E3 used to be, it’s instead begun to fill that void with a consumer-oriented event to reveal hot new tech and games of the personal computer persuasion.  PC GameOn’s site is still light on details, but promises more will be forthcoming in “June.“  It’s scheduled to immediately follow the Austin Game Developers Conference and Game Career Seminar.
