Linger in Shadows the not-a-game coming to Playstation Network
While looking for any more information about the Playstation 4 and any goodies coming out soon for my Playstation 3, I came across this blog from the new executive producer of the Playstation Network, Kevin Furuichi, announcing a Halloween-themed episode of Qore available in the Playstation Store this Thursday, October 9, 2008, and this strange looking game interactive site
, whatever it is, is called Linger in Shadows. I can’t tell what it is but you can also access it on PSN on October 9, 2008.
Although it looks like a cool game and uses the PSN Trophy system like a game, it is definitely not a game…
American student wins international game design competition
Nick Bently, a PHD candidate in computational neuroscience at Wake Forest University, has just become the second American to ever be selected as a finalist in the thirty-year history of the Boulogne-Billancourt game design competition. Bently’s winning design, Mind Ninja, has been described as a Hex-inspired competitive title in which one player attempts to build a bridge across the game board as the other tries to block them.
Bently will collect his 750 euro prize at a ceremony in France on November 24th. The other two 2007 winners are Laurent Escoffier of France and Xavier Georges of Belgium. The three designers beat out a field of 169 submitted entries (which was later whittled down to 13, and finally 3).
Bently described his study of neuroscience as one of his greatest inspirations in creating the game, and online play of Mind Ninja will soon be available on the game’s website.
It’s always fun to see what happens when creative drive and cutting-edge technology combine. Bently seems to be happy blending the scientific with the artistic – and he even performs improv comedy in his spare time. Congratulations, and good show.

12th annual Quakecon to feature new competitions

Pro gamers take notice – the NVIDIA sponsored QuakeCon 2007 competition will include the first ever “Quad Damage” tournament, featuring 1-on-1 play spanning all four Quake games, and the debut of the multiplayer Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars tournament.
Now in it’s twelfth year, organizers are looking to step up the intensity of the competition by offering bigger prizes and better bragging rights. The event is to take place from August 2-5, 2007 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX, with more than 6,000 gamers hoping to claim a piece of the $100,000 purse.
The line-up includes the forementioned QUAKE Wars tourney for team-based play, with 32 teams of 6 duking it out in double elimination rounds. The Quad Damage competition will feature 1 vs. 1 play organized round-robin style and spanning all four Quake games, with the obvious draw being that the winner can call him/herself the ultimate Quake champion (at least until next year).
