Jeff Green leaves 1Up

Everyone who follows 1up and it’s impressive stable of podcasts (and the 1up show) is surely mourning the loss of Jeff Green - former Editor-in-Chief of Games For Windows Magazine and overall awesome games journalist. Green had been with the company 17 years, and he states in his farewell blog post that the closing of the magazine (which occurred a few months ago) was a major factor in his decision to leave.
He’s actually going on to a better place, however, as he’ll be joining EA to work on The Sims brand - and surely his talents will be well harnessed there. I know I’ll miss his brand of good-natured snark on the GFW Radio podcast. It’s sad to see so many long-time staffers go (in the last year alone, several of the better-established editors, including Dan Hsu and Crispin Boyer, have left the building) - anyone feel like taking bets on who’s next? In any event, best of luck to Mr. Green.

ThinkGeek June 2008 catalog’s game-related goodies
The most recent issue of ThinkGeek catalog has been delivered and, as usual, it features several gamer goodies. Here’s a list of the more (and less) notable game-related goodies in the June 2008 ThinkGeek catalog.
On the more notable side there’s a programmable keyboard with mini OLEDs, Mario Kart slot cars, Halo 3 replicas and Zelda plush…
The worst ninja games ever

In the great internet debate of pirates vs. ninjas, pirates just got a little boost. 1up has a very funny little feature on the 5 worst ninja games ever made, calling out everything from the abysmal PS1 title Ninja to last year’s butt-of-every-Wii-joke Ninjabreadman. As much as lists can be a little cliched, this one is dead on, poking fun at one of gaming’s most ubiquitous figures (next to the zombie and the space marine, of course).
I have to say I agree with every choice, including the semi-ballsy move of putting classic NES pain simulator Ninja Gaiden high on the list. Cheap games are not fun, people.

Famitsu receals juicy Wii Mario Kart details
Last week (February 7, 2008), Japanese gaming magazine Weekly Famitsu exposed the first details of the new Mario Kart game currently in development for the Wii.
First is that the game will offer a choice between the regular go-karts and bikes, each of which handle differently. Both types can now do midair techniques which can grant speed boosts if done correctly.
The Wii Mario Kart will have 32 regular tracks, half of them new and the other half taken from…
EGM to release first hands-on impressions of Street Fighter IV

According to the 1UP.com Network, Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) will be delivering an 11-page spread dedicated to Street Fighter IV (SFIV) in its January 2008 issue (available December 18, 2007).
The feature represents a world-exclusive first look at Capcom’s latest installment in its popular fighting franchise, complete with hands-on impressions of gameplay. The 1UP Network also notes that information regarding characters, graphics and gameplay mechanics will be provided. In addition, 1UP.com and GameVideos will feature exclusive Street Fighter-related content throughout the month of January 2008 to fan the flames of curious gamers’ interests.
There has been a great deal of speculation since the SFIV teaser was released by Capcom several weeks ago. Many gamers even considered it to be a hoax until production was confirmed by developers and the main question on everyone’s mind since then is, “2D or 3D gameplay?”
Street Fighter has always been a fighting game franchise rooted in 2D mechanics and is widely considered to be the series that pioneered concepts and mechanics important to casual and tournament players alike. A 2D SFIV is certainly what most fans that have followed the franchise from its inception have been demanding and expecting, so it comes as a relief to many that the first in-game screenshot of the game seems to indicate that the SFIV will utilize 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. In any case, perhaps the revival of the classic series will be accompanied by the revival of the classic arcade scene—but I’m not holding my breath.
