When Midway filed bankruptcy, one of the potentially lucrative licenses it had was the right to make games based on TNA Wrestling. When Warner Bros. bought the company it picked up the rights to several Midway games but PWInsider said the TNA game wasn’t one of them.

PWInsider’s TNA sources said the rights may bounce back to TNA since Warner Bros. wasn’t interested in purchasing them. TNA officials won’t comment on what, if anything, is happening with the game. TNA Impact sold one million units with reviews being just so-so.

Still, wrestling games have a built-in fan base and TNA is still basking in the publicity glow of a partnership with wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. Wrestling needs more competition in terms of programming and video games, so here’s hoping something works out.

EA’s Madden franchise often comes under fire for a perceived lack of innovation but here’s a feature that certainly promises some unique wrinkles.

Madden NFL 10 will soon contain a game mode that will combine elements of fantasy football and trading card gaming.

Madden Ultimate Team is a free downloadable addition on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network coming January 2010. In this game players will collect virtual packs of cards ranging from “platinum” to “bronze.”

You’ll be able to select everything from your team’s playbook to its uniforms and player cards include legendary statistical years such as Randy Moss’ 1999 Minnesota Vikings campaign. The download will come with a starter pack and you can purchase other cards through the in-game store or win them through in-game accomplishments.

This is definitely a different step for the franchise. It has had card collection modes before but this is the first time they’ve been folded into a separate game experience. I wonder if hardcore Madden fans will consider this a worthwhile distraction and, if this is successful, could we see the cards branch into other games?

Epic Games is making a breakthrough in the games community by offering one of the most acclaimed game engines, the Unreal Engine 3, free to the public.

Now anyone can get their hands on this technology by downloading the UDK, or Unreal Development Kit.

The Unreal Engine 3 has been used in blockbuster first-person shooters including the Gears of War franchise, Unreal Tournament 3 and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. It has also been adapted for other genres including RPGs (Bioshock and Mass Effect) and action games (Mirror’s Edge).

The UDK offers advanced tools including a physics engine, video encoding, particle effects, destructible environments, audio encoding and an AI system.

Although the UDK is targeted mainly at the development of games, other areas including design, architecture and construction can also benefit from the engine, so there’s much to like here for everybody.

This really got me excited and if my PC wasn’t a piece of junk I would be toying with the UDK right now. Epic Games has taken a huge step in the right direction by putting this engine on the hands of what could potentially be a huge crowd. I’m sure this will drive forward the development of games and I can’t wait to see what the modding community can do with this.

The minimum requirements for the UDK are:

• Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
• 2.0+ GHz processor
• 2 GB system RAM
• SM3-compatible video card
• 3 GB Free hard drive space

Read [If you’ve been by your favorite video game selling store in search of Atlus’ Demon’s Souls, you’ve likely been faced with a heartbreaking scenario. In many places it’s sold out. Fortunately, Atlus has just issued a press release stating it is aware of the situation and more copies of this unexpected hit are on their way to stores.

Demon’s Souls really is a fantastic game. Take a look back at Gamertell’s review and preview to see for yourself. It makes me want to actually go out and buy a PS3, instead of borrowing a friend’s. It’s especially great if your PS3 is hooked up to the internet so you can get assistance from other players. Plus, Atlus has even set up a Demon’s Souls Wiki so players can share and exchange essential knowledge.

You lucky, lucky residents of Burbank, California, and surrounding communities.

Insomniac Games had such a great response to the Community it held in 2008 to celebrate the release of Resistance 2 , the company is doing the same thing for Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. There will be free food, rare swag and a chance to see the latest installment in the best selling Ratchet and Clank series.

While Sony’s PlayStation has never had a true mascot per se, Ratchet and Clank have been on the company’s consoles every generation and games featuring the duo are always well received. As the title suggests, there are some issues with the timestream and it’s up to this adventurous robot-Lombax duo to set things right through platforming, puzzles and yes, I’m sure they will blow a few things up in the process.

To get in on the community event, you’ll need to be one of the first 120 people to get in the door at Insomniac Games on Friday, October 23, 2009. The event is taking place 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Insomniac Games’s studio at 2255 N. Ontario St., #550, Burbank, CA. Although the event is open to anyone, if you are under the age of 18, plan to bring a legal guardian or they won’t let you in.

The description of the event on the PlayStation Blog also mentions “autographs to collect – maybe even a couple from some famous non-Insomniacs,” so you may get to shake hands with a celebrity or two.

The latest installment has gone gold and is slated to hit US store shelves October 27, 2009. If you’re a Ratchet and Clank superfan, you’ll surely be interested in the collector’s edition that includes a 3D lenticular cover, an exclusive artwork book and a PlayStation Network voucher that will take you to the Insomniac Moon, a special level that resembles the Insomniac Games offices.

Zombies have invaded PlayStation Home ... Again

In an Halloween-style event along with a new personal space has been released that will transform all that enter into zombies. In much the same fashion as the Hamster invasion earlier this year, Home residents are divided in a virtual protest. Those for the undead and those against. Check out Mr. R. Phunrooner of the “Society of People Against Zombies” website at Undead Yourself website for more information about this battle. Players can choose to wander the streets of Home in search of a warm brain to munch on or join the rest of humanity in their new struggle of survival this Halloween.

This new in-world space is loaded with activities, mini-games and all things Ratchet and Clank to include a store with Ratchet and Clank-themed items available for purchase (see store list below) for fans awaiting the launch of the new Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time release for the PlayStation 3. NBA Live 10 is experiencing a renaissance thanks to the best reviews the franchise has received in years. As an example, Game Rankings rates NBA Live 10 with an average review score of 81.6 percent (as of 1:00 p.m., October 16, 2009), compiled from various sources.

But there’s always room to tweak a thing or three and, in his Twitter feed, NBA Live lead designer Mike Wang said the first patch for the basketball sim should hit the first week in November 2009.

Confirmed in the update are some changes to the manual backdown mechanic to make post play feel more authentic. Wang said player feedback is being taken into account so if you’re tweeting, let him know what you think of the game.

Patches won’t be the only way NBA Live 10 receives changes as the “Dynamic DNA” feature that debuted last year returns. It will designate “hot” and “cold” players according to the real-world statistical exploits of pro b-ballers. I can’t wait to see how that plays out in dynasty or in online matches after the NBA season kicks off.

For my money, I hope one of the first fixes is making sure players do not step out of bounds in random situations. It happens way, way too often and it’s heart wrenching to have a close game turn on one of those glitches.

Today (October 15, 2009), Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) officially announced that it will be making available a 250 GB PlayStation 3 on November 3, 2009, in the US for the suggested retail price of $349.99.

The increased hard drive is intended to allow PS3 owners to download even more content (which, of course, would mean more digital sales for Sony via PlayStation Store) and personal files.

According to the press release, the 250 GB system will have “the same form factor and functionality as the current 120 GB system” which will continue to be offered this holiday season. The announcement also noted that 600 million “pieces of content have been downloaded from PlayStation Network as of September 2009.”

It’s unclear exactly what a “piece of content” includes. Considering that Sony Home involves a lot of free downloads the company may (or may not) be counting individual avatar garments.

Content soon to be available through the PlayStation store specifically mentioned in the release include the downloadable games PixelJunk Shooter, Gravity Crash and Hustle Kings and the movies Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and, Bruno.

Are you interested in playing Madden but have no desire to learn the Wildcat, shift coverages and defend against “nanos?” EA Sports is channeling the days of High Impact Football and NFL Blitz with Madden NFL Arcade, a downloadable title for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live that touts fast-paced 5-on-5 football with a 60-yard field.

There are no penalties, field goals or first-downs and Madden Arcade games play to a predetermined number of points with no set time limit.

Also, the frenetic play includes “Game Changers,” powerups that do things such as summon an army of defensive linemen and freeze your opponent’s player in place. It will include four-player local co-op and online head-to-head play. Oh, and of course there will be Xbox Achievements and PS3 Trophies

EA has been doing “extreme” versions of typical sports for years with the FIFA, NBA and NFL Street series. Most recently they took on the NHL with 3 On 3 NHL Arcade.

While that one had NHL players but not specific teams, Madden Arcade will roll out all 32 NFL franchises. This looks as if it could be a fun addition to the Madden family.

Madden NFL Arcade will be available December 15, 2009, for $14.99 on PSN or 1200 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live.

Critter Crunch was one of the first iPhone-iPod Touch games that showed how those devices were capable of delivering a worthwhile gaming experience. Now it’s the PS3’s turn to give Critter Crunch’s addictive charms a whirl.

Critter Crunch was released exclusively on the PlayStation Network on October 8, 2009, for the reasonably low price of $6.99. It shares the same concept as its iPhone-iPod Touch counterpart but gets a considerable upgrade in the graphics department. Capybara Games hand drew all the animations in Critter Crunch and the result is nothing short of beautiful. Once you throw in multiplayer, Trophy support and leaderboards you’ve got a game that deserves to live on your hard drive.

Critter Crunch is a puzzle game at its core but that doesn’t stop it from trying to include a story to run alongside the gameplay. You control a chubby and jolly looking critter named Biggs who is the center of attention for a nature documentary. Quick, unvoiced cut scenes featuring the documentaries host are sprinkled in between levels and provide a mildly amusing take on Biggs’ exploits. However, you don’t come into Critter Crunch expecting a story. The jewel here is how the game works (which is very well).

Critter Crunch appears to be a simple match-three game but it’s slightly more complex than that.

The object of the game is to feed small creatures to larger creatures until they literally explode. If more than one creature of the same color happens to be near the exploding one, they will all explode. Exploding critters leave behind jewels that Biggs can consume for extra points. These points go on to fill the hunger meter on the left side of the screen. The level ends once the meter is full. The game wants you to chain combos together for three reasons: 1) You clear the level faster, 2) you bump up your rankings in the leaderboards and 3) you can vomit rainbows into your son’s named Smalls mouth for even more points and a good laugh.

Yes, vomiting rainbows into Smalls mouth is a huge part of maximizing points.You gain this ability by chaining together a chain of eight or more exploding critters. Racking up these combos isn’t necessary to clear the level, but it does give a considerable amount of bragging rights.

Critter Crunch is spread out across many areas with unique looks in each one. In many of these areas new types of critters are introduced. Once such creature is a bomb that clears everything caught in its blast radius. Another special critter type is made of rock. He cannot be fed or moved around by Biggs. Instead he must be dispatched by exploding critters above him (causing him to drop off his vine) or by using a power foods.

Power foods are earned by exploding random glowing critters. This causes them to drop food such as watermelons. Biggs can use the seeds from the watermelon to instantly pop any critter. Midway through the game all the critters, tricks and abilities you’ve learned are lumped together. The critters even start to descend down the vines more quickly that before, making fast thinking essential.

Multiplayer mode is split between cooperative and competitive modes. Cooperative mode tests how long you and a friend can last through the continuous onslaught of critters and competitive mode is a one on one puzzle fight to the death. It works similar to the Puzzle Fighter philosophy by giving you special powers to temporarily make things more difficult for your opponent. I’ve been on the receiving in of a stunning lightning bolt attack on more than a few occasions.

Even though multiplayer is fun, it’s near impossible to play it to your full potential without through most of the adventure mode. There are some unique critter types that can only be popped in specific ways and multiplayer isn’t the place to try and learn the trick.

Critter Crunch is an excellent edition to anyone’s PSN library. There’s no other game on the network with a hand drawn art style as gorgeous as this. New elements are introduced at a steady pace which stops things from ever getting too repetitive. If puzzler’s are your thing then Critter Crunch is a safe bet.

Enough with all this PSPgo talk, especially about how expensive the $249.99 handheld is. Let’s have some happy news. Let’s talk about a good deal. For example, let’s look at the two PS3 sales over at the Sony Style online store. Yes, normally its more expensive to buy PS3s at the Sony Style store, but that isn’t the case right now. For a limited time, an 80gb PS3 is $249.99 instead of $399, and a 160gb PS3 Drake’s Fortune bundle is $349.99 instead of $499.99. Even better, with the purchase of either system you get a free dualshock 3 controller.

First, let’s look at the PS3 80gb unit that’s on sale. It’s not a slim, sadly, but a PS3 is a PS3. And the price is a good deal. Normally, a PS3 is $299.99 at Amazon and $279.99 at Best Buy. So, while the sale’s on, it’s a great deal.

As for the 160gb Drake’s Fortune PS3 bundle, which includes Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and a voucher for Pain, it’s a pretty good deal too. Amazon’s also selling the same bundle for $349.99, but Best Buy wants $399.99 for it. The Sony Style promotion is probably the best deal at the moment though, since you get the free controller with it. If you miss out on the Sony Style deal, you can always go back and take advantage of the Amazon one.

The only thing is, you may not be able to take part in one of these great deals. The 80gb system is out of stock as of 12:26pm CST, October 13, 2009, and there’s no notice on the product page suggesting when it may be back in stock. The 160gb Drake’s Fortune PS3 bundle is still in stock though, so if you can scrape together a little more money you could still get that.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and MTV Games today (October 12, 2009) released the full track list for the upcoming Lego Rock Band game.

The list includes songs by Blink-182, David Bowie, Jackson 5, Pink and Queen. The press release indicates that, like previous Rock Band incarnations, there will be downloadable tracks available after the game is released through the Lego Rock Band store. Song packs for Rock Band will work with this release as well although only the “family-friendly” games will be able to be used in Lego Rock Band. The Lego Rock Band tracks can then be exported across other Rock Band games. For a fee, of course (for 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99).

Gamers will be able to create avatars, band members, roadies and crew by mixing and matching various Lego pegs, parts and pieces (please add licensed properties). You can also use your other Rock Band peripherals and controllers with this release.

Lego Rock Band will be rated “Everyone” by the ESRB and will be released Holiday 2009 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and DS.

The Resistance series was one of the first franchises to grace the PS3. Both Fall of Man and its sequel have been well received by the general public and Resistance: Retribution on the PSP followed suit. We really haven’t started thinking about the inevitable Resistance sequel yet but apparently Insomniac Games has decided to start putting ideas in our heads a bit early.

A picture was posted on the NeoGAF forums of a billboard that bears the Resistance 3 logo. The picture of the billboard was taken in Shreveport, Louisiana (USA) (where gas is almost $3 a gallon). A closer look at the advertisement shows images of the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building within the logo text. The newly designed PS3 logo can also be found in the top left corner of the billboard.

Seeing as how this information came from NeoGAF it’s important to not take this rumor as fact. After all, people can do amazing things with Photoshop these days. Even so, let’s entertain and examine the notion of this being real for a second.

The first Resistance debuted on November 17, 2006m in the United States. Resistance 2 was released November 4, 2008, almost exactly two years later. Insomniac Games’ other big PS3 franchise, the Ratchet and Clank Future series debuted on October 23, 2007. Its newest game, A Crack in Time will be released on October 27, 2009, again two years later.

Whether this proves to be true or a blatant fabrication, it has succeeded in getting Resistance back on our brains.

Editor’s Note: Also notice that the image includes a darker rectangular area centered under the logo, which is typically where a slogan or release date is posted. Either it was intentionally left blank for a future date to be pasted over, the date was simply painted over, the date or slogan was blurred out by the photog (to keep that morsel for their own site) or it is simply a leftover section of mis-colored pixels due to sloppy image manipulation.
