A wave of nostalgia washes over us in this week’s update as the big release is the Xbox Live update of classic Nintendo 64 shooter Perfect Dark.

This game was another FPS smash by Rare and is often called the spiritual successor to the groundbreaking GoldenEye 007. The Xbox Live version will sport vastly improved visuals because if there was one glaring complaint about the original, it was the choppy frame rate. And now you have XBLA multiplayer support, achievement and avatar awards. This is all available for 800 Microsoft Points, a surprisingly low price considering how anticipated this one is.

This could be the crown jewel of the Xbox Live Block Party. Controls for this new version are tailored toward fans of current shooters. You have the option to play in “Classic Style,” “Spartan” for Halo fans and “Duty Calls” for those who love Call of Duty.

The Deal of the Week keeps that “old school” vibe going as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and Fable are all 800 MP each through March 22, 2010.

Yes, by all means enjoy your new games but don’t forget your roots.

It wasn’t surprising to hear that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves received the Audio of the Year award March 12, 2010, at Moscone Center during the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, CA (USA) following nine nominations prior to the event.

Games were judged by audio industry professionals as well as members of G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild). Uncharted 2: Among Thieves actually tied with Assassin’s Creed II for the Music of the Year award.

Home Updates and Issues

PS Home 1.35

Many of you have already noticed that Home has a brand new look to it this week following the recent 1.35 update. The way a player logs into home now has been changed. Connection to the PlayStation Network now happens automatically without having to go through messages to log on and then taken to the navigation screen. The navigator screen displays favorite places, recommended spaces, personal spaces, location of friends if they’re on and of course an exploration map that is now broken down by spaces already visited or by the game’s category (i.e., sports, action, adventure, etc.). Players are no longer trapped at the last location they visited, especially if that space was dragging and keeping them from exiting the space. You can move around the world of HOME literally at the click of the button quickly. Here’s a partial list of features to expect posted by Sony Home Manager CydoniaX in the PlayStation forums, visit the forum to view the complete list of changes:

• Home Navigator - replaces the World Map. This new feature allows players faster space loading, easy access to their favorite personal and game spaces without sorting through a huge confusing map.
• Home spaces - Are now all located under tab to include personal clubs the player either owns or has a membership to.
• Favourite Spaces - Any space that has been favored during a player’s exploration of the Home universe.
• Friends - This improved friend’s list displays the location where their friend is located, the new feature for this category is that if a friend happens to be in their personal space players can virtually “knock on the door” to be asked over. When a friend “knocks on the door” players will receive notice that a friend wants to be invited, just press the start button when you see the message and choose whether to let them in or not.

PS Home 1.35 issues and fixes

Along with updates there are often issues and quick resolutions to the matter while others experienced no problems at all. For those players who couldn’t log into home after the update like a few of my friends did. Here are some of the issues and updates I’ve found in the PlayStation Forums to help you get back Home:

• Logon Issue - Some of my friends and I have experienced not being able to log in to home following the update, if you received error code Z(9-2) also this is an easy fix thanks to Home Manager Locust_Star for saving my PS3 from flying through a window. Just simply reset your clock. I’m not sure why the clock changed to 2020 instead of remaining 2010 but it’s often the last place anyone would check. But once it was reset we were able to return Home with no problem at all.
• Portable Item Bug - A bug that has kept players from joining mini-games, crashing a system when they interact with their personal wardrobe while the item was in use has been fixed. Which means the annoying bubble machine grievers will be back. Sigh.
• Furniture Bug - The bug that caused furniture to disappear from a club house when the leader arrives or cause a crash when furniture items were bumped against each other or loading certain items into a personal space has been fixed.
• Shopping bugs - Bugs that prevented players from canceling a purchase after it has started downloading, caused the “Add to Basket” button to suddenly become permanently unavailable or preview clothing items without setting up an avatar has been fixed.
• Loading Bugs - Bugs that have prevented sound settings from saving, stalled a download queue when attempting to download certain scenes or caused problems launching into home while the HDD was completely full have been fixed.
• Mini-Game Bugs - Various bugs found within the Pool and Bowling mini-games to include allowing multiple players to join multiple queues at the same time have been fixed.
• Camera Bugs - A Bug that allowed PSN Notification messages to be captured while using the camera and caused the picture aspect ratio to record incorrectly have been fixed.

New Real Estate

• Eden - Primarch’s Vigilarium Personal Space - Whether you’re a Pulse L’Cie or a Cocoon L’Cie looking for a hideout with a view of the city, or a Final Fantasy fan you would appreciate this grand piece of Eden from the newly released Final Fantasy 13 for $4.99 at the Real Estate Store located on the second floor of the Mall. Even though the space has no exit to Central Plaza or even empty spaces for picture frames it’s still an elegant space all the same. • Luxury Racing Box Personal Space - For all the racing fans that frequent Home, there’s a new space that puts players in their personal private box near the tracks for $4.99. This space has an exit to Central Plaza and up to 9 open spaces for personal picture frames. Check out the Luxury Racing Box Personal Space:

Events

• A “Wee"bellion is coming - Central Plaza has been decorated for the upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day event, there’s also a “Wee”-bellion event taking place now until Thursday, March 18, 2010. Players are given chance to win a free copy of PixelJunk Monsters by finding the voucher codes hidden in the “Wee”-bellion posters around home. Each poster will either contain a four digit section of the code or instructions on how to find the remaining codes. Once found, look around Central Plaza and find Brother Seamus McSwilly, a leprechaun, who will randomly appear in Central Plaza and email HomeContests@playstation.sony.com with “Seamus McSwilly in the subject line along with your PSN ID, at least two found voucher codes and the photo of McSwilly to enter by noon pacific standard time on Thursday, March 18, 2010 to be considered. Winners will receive the completed codes to download one free copy of PixelJunk Monsters.
• Tester Show at the Theater - Watch episode 4 of Tester in Auditorium 8 at the Theater in Central Plaza this week to receive the “Game Over Fame Girl!” T-shirt.
• Sodium One Hub - Players who frequent the hub to squish scorpions should visit Vickie to receive their newest reward items, if you completed the scorpion quests and squished the numbers needed to earn trophies. Visit Vickie to receive new and improved stomping boots and a scorpion emoticon item that floats a blue scorpion over your head. Supposedly there’s an overpopulation of scorpions in the hub and players are asked to exterminate these pests immediately for even more rewards.

Issues
• The Gamers Lounge is not listed in the Navigator, those who frequent the Gamers Lounge can still visit it if it was favored before the update and is still accessible through the Central Plaza Map.
Updates
• The unlockable items rewarded for playing the Four Barrel’s of Fury game in the Resistence space are back and unfortunately those who were supposed to receive the items previously, these items have not been returned yet and may have to replay the game to earn them back. As soon as a fix is available where players don’t have to replay the game to get them back, I will post them here.

I’ve been playing games on the iPhone since the day the App Store opened. I’ve enjoyed plenty and I’ve hated plenty.

I’ve played some for review and I’ve played some for pleasure.

And yet there are hundreds of great games out there I haven’t played because either A) I didn’t know about them, or B) they didn’t seem to make sense on the iPhone. The accelerometer and touch screen are nifty features but are rarely conducive to gaming.

And don’t even get me started on that tiny screen.

The iPad, therefore, will be a more logical choice of many games because the controls won’t be as cramped. I won’t need to worry as much about my thumb hiding the action or my fingers missing the proper “buttons.”

Yet, it’s still kind of tricky because many iPhone games were designed specifically for the small screen. The iPhone is easy to tilt and turn, for example. I won’t know if this is the case with the iPad until April 3rd (2010).

And so, there are quite a few games I’m eager to try out on the iPad. I’m going to list off ten of them over two articles.

The five here are games I’ve already played on my iPhone. Later this week I’ll round up five I haven’t yet played, either because they haven’t been released or I just didn’t think the iPhone would do them justice.

I have no guarantee that iPad optimized versions of any of these games will be released but I think that most are a safe bet, starting with…

1. MotoChaser (Freeverse)

This is one of the very first apps I ever purchased for the iPhone, if not the first, and it’s still on my phone. Despite a ridiculous number of racing games that have come since, I still prefer MotoChaser‘s unique style of gameplay and whimsical premise.

MotoChaser was the first game to really sell me on the legitimacy of the iPhone as a gaming device, so I’m going to rely on it to do the same with the iPad. It’ll instantly let me know if the iPad’s processor can handle decent graphics at an acceptable frame rate. More importantly, it’ll provide a clear indication of whether tilt-based controls will work on a device that large.

2. Jungle Style Pinball (Gameprom)

I love pinball. I love pinball sims. Jungle Style Pinball is my current favorite on the iPhone, so it gets this slot. On the iPhone, you tap the left and right of the screen to activate the flippers. I imagine it’ll be exactly the same on the iPad and that’s to the game’s benefit.

The iPad should be quite comfortable to hold and use while playing pinball, provided I’m able to brace it with the base of my thumbs while tapping the screen. I’d have to be able to tap higher up on the screen to do that, which raises an interesting development choice; do they allow the pinball table to take up the whole screen and pan the camera up and down as with the iPhone version, or should they force the full length of the table onto the screen at once? This will leave empty black areas to the left and right of the table, and that’s the way they should go. The black areas will allow me to leave my thumbs in place without every covering the gameplay area, and it’ll eliminate the camera lag problem with the iPhone version in which the ball often rolls completely out of view before the camera can catch up.

3. Space Invaders (Taito)

Note that I’m including the original Space Invaders, not Space Invaders Infinity Gene. This is because I really would love for the iPad to become my portable virtual arcade. Load it up with Space Invaders, Frogger, and any other ‘70s/ or 80s arcade game that doesn’t require an analog stick for decent controls, and I’m suddenly back to wearing the collar up on my denim jacket and hanging out in buildings that still reek of cigarette smoke.

Showing off the nostalgia of Space Invaders on the iPhone is one thing (and Taito totally nailed the nostalgia aspect in their iPhone version), but being able to do so on a device large enough for multiple people to see at once would be fantastic. You will all have your own games that are crowd pleasers despite being single player games. With my crowd, it’s throwback arcade games, and Space Invaders is the best example I’ve seen on the iPhone.

4. Dracula: The Path of the Dragon - Part 1 (Chillingo)

Steve introduced the iPad to us while sitting down in a comfy chair, using it as if a book. Chillingo’s Dracula: The Path of the Dragon plays as if a book. It’s a “point and click” (“touch and drag?”) adventure game of the type we used to get all the time back in the ‘90s, and of which we’ll hopefully seen more in the ‘10s.

Adventure games are perfectly suited to playing while lounging on the sofa or in bed, as they don’t demand any twitch skills. When you’re holding a gamepad playing a solid action game, it makes sense to be sitting on the edge of your seat or jumping around with the action. With a graphic adventure that sort of lazily asks you to solve some puzzles, tap here and there, and watch a bunch of cut scenes, you may as well be sitting comfortably. Steve has demanded it be thus, so thus it shall be.

5. Hybrid: Eternal Whisper (Gamevil)

This is my last open question (at least for now). Hybrid is an epic action/adventure/RPG that always felt like it was too big for the iPhone. It requires a lot of reading, which isn’t always fun to do on the iPhone. It has fantastic graphics with battle effects that would happily burst right out of the device if allowed. Some of the battles take quite some time to complete, so it’s the type of game you’d want to play at home as opposed to in Starbucks waiting for your lowfat turkey bacon breakfast sandwich to be delivered. But, there’s a problem.

On the iPhone, the action buttons are too small to hit accurately, making the fights more difficult than need be. This could be improved on the iPad, but will we even be able to reach them? That bezel, while necessary for holding the device, means your thumbs won’t be able to reach very far into the screen itself, especially for games requiring horizontal orientation. I’ll therefore hope to use Hybrid as my first look at how developers will be repurposing their iPhone games, and to determine whether developers who had set their sites too high on the iPhone will find happier, more comfortable dwellings on the iPad.

The Xbox Live Arcade House Party continues this week and now they have let in the racecars with weapons fully attached. Because it is simply not a party until somebody straps a rocket launcher to the hood of their car. Scrap Metal is a racer with heavy car combat elements and it’s drawing favorable comparisons to the Twisted Metal series.

When you defeat Scrap Metal’s armored-up bosses, you will add their supercars to your garage for your own destructive purposes. And also be on the lookout for an AI car called “Major Nelson,” a tribute to Xbox Live’s community director. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the opportunity to grind your Xbox Live friends under your monster truck wheels in multiplayer matches. If vehicular combat is a favorite of yours, Scrap Metal will no doubt be a worthwhile purchase for you. It became available March 10, 2010 for 1200 Microsoft Points. Scrap Metal gear for your Xbox Live Avatar becomes available March 11.

There is even more racing to be had in this week’s game add-ons with Forza Motorsport 3’s Jalopnik Car Pack. Perhaps more important than new cars for Forza players is a patch fixing some of the game’s nagging online issues. That includes team balancing in multiplayer hoppers, where smaller teams will receive AI additions. The Jalopnik Pack is 400 Microsoft Points, the patch will download automatically the next time you play Forza online.

On March 11, Bioshock 2 receives its first DLC with the Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack. It raises the multiplayer rank cap to 50, adds two new characters to multiplayer and adds new masks and trials. There’s a lot of goodies to make Rapture an even more twisted place to visit. The Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack will run you 400 Microsoft Points.

The Deal of the Week is the Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack Bundle for 1600 MP, down from the normal price of 2000 MP. It features nine multiplayer maps and three co-op zombie maps. It also features 20 map-related achievements. This deal is available through March 15, 2010.

If you ever thought about taking a peaceful vacation on a tropical island, IREM just opened its Seaside of Memories on the US Server. This space is gorgeous, overlooking the ocean with huts, white sandy beaches and dolphins leaping near by. Walk into the water to see various tropical fishes swim past you as you search the ocean floor for random treasures like jewelry, a pirate’s chest either empty, full of gold or a nasty mimic. Just be careful to watch your health bar and go up for air every now and then so you don’t drown. )If you want to spend more time underwater, purchase the snorkels from the Angel Paradise store on the pier.)

Ask Yoda

• Want to know what your future holds? Ask Yoda in Central Plaza, a new interactive fountain located in Central Plaza between the Mall and apartment complex. The results are funny.

Updates

Evolving Items

• Those who purchased batch 2 of evolving items should check their inventory. They have evolved. If you purchased the egg you should find a hatched chicken in your inventory, a model car or ant farm etc. All evolving items have been removed, no word as to when new batches of evolving items will be appearing at the mall.

Salt Shooter Game Space

• The Salt Shooter Game Space has been updated and players can now decorate and furnish this space as a personal space.

Central Plaza Kiosk

• The Tester: Goat has been removed from the Central Plaza kiosk and now offers a sneakered Monkey statue for 49 cents instead.

Make.Believe

• Saucer Pop has been temporarily removed for the Make.Believe events game, approach the fountain and wait a little to receive a thermal shirt and then play the game to receive a phone camera. (Note: The phone camera is for game use only. You will not find it in your inventory.) Read the clue and use the camera phone to find and photograph the orb hidden somewhere in central plaza then return to the fountain for the next clue. Just like the older version of the game you must find the next orb hidden somewhere on Home to receive your free virtual reward. Sony’s Make.Believe event will feature a new virtual item each week, this week’s reward is a motorcycle helmet.

Since it isn’t out yet, I’m not going to speak to the quality of the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie game. Actually, I have a pretty good idea. The history of movie-based games tells us it will likely fall squarely into the “2 out of 5 stars” category.

That’s not what important about the game anyhow.

What’s important is the sweet, sweet 1,000 GamerScore points for the Xbox 360 it offers.

Many of the achievements look story-based, as well as the standard “Kill X number of enemies.” None of those numbers are exceedingly high, for which I am thankful. That Kill 53,000 enemies running gag designers were doing was not good for completion percentage. The unknowns include how you’ll go about unlocking the various Iron Man armors.

Also of note, only the “Invincible” achievement appears to be tied to a particular difficulty level. Even on the easiest difficulty setting, this game looks like it should yield 700 to 1,000 GamerScore points without much trouble. That’s a great game for achievement point grinding, fans.

Iron Man 2 hits Xbox 360 on May 4, 2010. The game is also available on the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

This week’s PlayStation Portable Download is Dante’s Inferno (English and French version) for $39.99. Based on an epic poem by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), from the Italian poets collection La Divina Commedia or The Divine Comedy. Sometimes video game companies just don’t listen to what fans want. It’s understandable. Publishers are focused on making money and working on games that will give them some kind of guaranteed return, and that often means games that people desperately want don’t get picked up for worldwide releases because financial success isn’t guaranteed.

That’s when fans step up, and get to work on fan translations. Ordinary people who happen to be fluent in Japanese, or know a bit about hacking, take on the task of preparing games for an English speaking audience. While actually getting to play the fan translations may be a questionable act (Piracy is very, very bad. Support your developers and publishers.), there are some situations where it is the only way to play a game that will never, ever see a worldwide release.

This week in Important Importables, we’re looking at some particularly notable fan translations that have either been completed, or are currently being worked on. Most of the headers below also double as links to the translation project or translation group’s pages, so you can read more about their endeavors.

Mother 3 GBA

The Mother 3 fan translation is undoubtedly one of the best known fan translations in existance. When Nintendo GameBoy Advance owners everywhere by failing to release the latest entry in what Americans know as the Earthbound series overseas, fans rose up and the Starmen.net team began work on the Mother 3 Fan Translation.

The group worked for years on the project, who’s lead translator Tomato, is even a professional video game translator, released the first patch in 2008, and a second patch with slight fixes in 2009. The first was downloaded over 100,000 times in the first week. The group even created and released a Mother 3 Handbook that fans could purchase to help them through the game and appreciate it more.

If you visit the site, you’ll find walkthroughs, information about the process, the patch, game analysis and encouragement to support and purchase the actual Mother 3 game. Spanish, French, Italian and other translations of Mother 3 are currently in the works, and it’s one of the few translation projects where even people in the game industry were happy and didn’t object.

Fatal Frame 4 Wii

The Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is honestly one of the most impressive and ambitious fan translations I have ever seen. Plus, it doesn’t require users to turn to piracy to take advantage of it!

Once you apply the simple patch to your Wii, it will not only allow you to run the official Japanese Fatal Frame 4 disc, a feat that’s normally impossible due to region protection, but it will also automatically translate the game into English. The Fatal Frame 4 Translation Team even created multiple versions of the patch, to work with different Wii firmwares, and state on the website that they will update the patches should future Wii firmware block them.

Soma Bringer DS

The fan translation for Soma Bringer is slightly less organized, as it’s an open translation headed by a devoted fan named Darth Nemesis, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less spectacular than the two already mentioned. It isn’t a full, 100% translation, but it’s over 97% done and anyone who patches the game will have no problem playing it in English.

Soma Bringer is a loved DS game that was adored in Japan, and has developed quite a cult following online. It was developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo, but unfortunately it seems the company has forgotten about it after it’s February 28, 2008 release. Idolm@ster SP PSP

I actually had no idea this project existed, until I started writing this article, but I’m quite happy and pleased to see that it does! There’s an open translation project going on for the Idolm@ster PSP games Perfect Sun, Missing Moon and Wandering Star. While all three games are being translated, Perfect Sun is the furthest along and the only one with a patch released.

Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 1st Love Plus DS

I’m mentioning this little gem of a fan translation in today’s column simply because I know a lot of otome and simulation fans are frequent readers. This is an open fan translation that is currently in the works, and no patches have been officially released yet. The group of fans working on it are doing very well though, and you can see their progress by visiting the project page’s website.

Tales of Innocence DS

Since Namco Bandai has been a bit lax in releasing entries in the Tales of series overseas, quite a few fan translations have popped up for various entries over the years. One of them is Absolute Zero’s fan translation of the second DS Tales of game, Tales of Innocence. An amazing thing about the Absolute Zero Tales of Innocence translation is that the team is not only patching the game, they’re also fixing bugs and glitches! So this patch, when completed, will not only translate it into English, it’ll also make the game more playable and enjoyable.

Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword GBA

This is a somewhat hard to find fan translation, but quite comprehensive. It’s an English translation of the GBA game Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi, also known as Fire Emblem 6 or Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword. It’s actually the sequel to the Fire Emblem GBA game released in North America. Though it was released first, chronologically the events in Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword take place after the events in Fire Emblem. The translation isn’t complete, but the Dark Twilkitri Net Translation Division has done a wonderful job so far and there has been a patch released. The same team is also working on a patch for the SNES Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu game.

Policenauts PS1

The Policenauts Translation Project came together to bring Hideo Kojima and Konami’s PS1, science fiction adventure game to English speaking gamers. It’s a first person adventure where players help a policenaut, an astronaut policeman, solve the murder of his ex-wife and disappearance of her current husband. The PS1 patch was released in 2009 on Hideo Kojima’s birthday.

Sailor Moon: Another Story SNES

The Bishoujo Senshi Translations team and Niche from FuSoYa translated this surprisingly amazing SNES RPG. True, it’s probably not everyone’s first choice when it comes to import games, but it was the very first fan translation I was exposed to, and it really is a good SNES-era RPG, so I figured it’d be worth mentioning. The Bishoujo Senshi Translations team’s page is down, but there are plenty of screenshots showing just how much work went into the game and what an admirable translation it is online. If you’re an anime fan, or just like well-made, classic RPGs, then look into what a good job they did.

Aeon Genesis

Not a fan translation, but rather one of the most well known and notable fan translation groups. Aeon Genesis has completed translations for 70 games, and is working on translations for almost 40 more. Many of the games are classics for earlier systems like the NES and SNES. Some of their best known works include English translations for Cave Story (PC), Live-A-Live (SNES), Shin Megami Tensei (SNES), Shiren the Wanderer: Mysterious Dungeon 2 (SNES), Rockman & Forte (SNES) and Ys V (SNES).

Here’s an acronym that’s more than a mouthful: The National Academy of Video Game Testers and Reviewers Corp. (aka NAViGaTR, pronounced “navigator”) announced the winners of is 2009 awards last week (February 26, 2010).

Unlike most awards - with either a highly exclusive short list of voters or relatively wide open to the public - the nominees and winners are selected by volunteer industry professional and game critics. In this case, more than 950 members (with about 640 actually voting).

Top winners this year include Batman: Arkham Asylum with nine awards (from 17 nominations) including Game of the Year and Best Supporting Performance in a Drama for Mark Hamill. The other was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves which won 10 awards (of 16 nominations). The other multi-award winners, which only received 2 awards each, include Brutal Legend, The Beatles: Rock Band, inFamous, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Scribblenauts.

In terms of publishers, Sony swept with 19 awards and EA came in a distant second with nine. Nintendo, which typically had a strong showing (and still hold the overall award record) had only three wins.

Some notable single award winners include The Sims 3 for Best Game Simulation, Flower for Game Special Class and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for Game Sequel,

Noticeable non-winners include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was nominated for 10 awards and only won one for Sound Effects, and Halo 3: ODST, nominated for one award, Lead Performance in a Drama for Nathan Fillion, which it lost to Uncharted 2. Likewise, Dragon Age: Origins was nominated for five awards and did not win any. DJ Hero was also nominated for five awards which it did not win.

This week’s downloadable PlayStation 3 game is Greed Corps. for $9.99. In this cute little turn-based strategy game, players not only have to harvest their land’s natural resources but also build an army to either protect it or conquer their enemies territories and harvest their natural resources for themselves on more than 24 maps and even more unlockable maps by playing either online with three other players or challenge the CPU in three different difficulty levels. Players also have the option of customizing their own online matches to earn trophies and titles as they play.

This week’s PlayStation Portable Download is echoshift for $14.99. In this puzzle game players must try to reach the exit before time runs out, but the only problem is, you have to solve the puzzles quickly to open gates, lower bridges, etc. get across the platform towards the exit. If you don’t make it, don’t worry, the game rewinds and this time an echo of your former movements will solve the puzzle to get you closer to your goal.

The Apple App Store gaming update is Gamertell’s weekly look at the previous week’s Apple App Store game releases. We cover them all - good and not so good - in their respective categories with a breakdown of the great games and the free games right where you want ‘em, at the top and in your face. The list is available every Monday, right as you are about to start that long work week.

Mecha anime and manga series are popular around the world. Gundam is the best known among all the series, and even helped kick off all mecha animes. All of the series feature humans piloting huge mechanized suits in the future, battling against one another.

Gundam first began as an animated TV show back in 1979 called Mobile Suit Gundam, and was originally created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise. Since then, there have been movies, animated tv shows, ovas and movies, mangas, novels, light novels, trading card game and tons of video games all based on the series. Japan’s even used Gundam as a cultural mascot, creating stamps featuring the mechanized units, creating a RX-78 monument at the Kamiigusa Station, using it as a nickname for Japan Self-Defense for equipment and even using Gundam mechas as promotional tools.

So this week, let’s take a brief look at all the Gundam animated series out there and some games that are available. If you decide to get interested in the series, prepare to do a lot of research, as there are multiple timelines and things can get quite complicated unless you’re really paying attention to the characters and situations.

A brief look at the Gundam series.

The Gundam series is somewhat notorious for being quite involved, and often complicated. While the Gundam games often have their own storylines, and just feature mechas from the anime series, familiar characters may also appear and certain wars or political altercations are often referenced. The best way to learn about these is to sit down and actually watch the anime. Sure, you can try just sitting and reading some viewers’ reports online, but those could get a bit dry and you may get factions and dates mixed up.

So here’s a list of all of the main anime series. Be aware that the first four series are all related and take part in the same timeline. (There are multiple timelines, so you may find it difficult to keep track unless you take notes between series or reference and online site. Even I have trouble figuring it all out and keeping it straight.) If you decide to start watching these series, make sure you have a lot of free time! Many of the series have 40-50 episodes, so becoming a fan requires quite an investment.

• Mobile Suit Gundam: (1979 - 1980) It was also made into a two volume manga and inspired three animated movies called Gundam: The Movie, Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow and Gundam III: Encounters in Space. It also inspired films and OVAs like Char’s Counterattack The anime is available in English.
• Zeta Gundam: (1985 - 1986) It also inspired a manga series and three animated movies, Zeta Gundam A New Translation: Heirs to the Stars, Zeta Gundam A New Translation II: Lovers and Zeta Gundam A New Translation: Love is the Pulse of the Stars. The anime is available in English.
• Gundam ZZ: (1986 - 1987), It’s story was only told in the anime series.
• Mobile Suit V Gundam: (1993 - 1994) It also inspired a manga series called Mobile Suit V Gundam Side Story.
• Mobile Fighter G Gundam: (1994 - 1995) It inspired three manga series, one called Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and then two others called Mobile Fighter G Gundam Gaiden: Shouryuu Densetsu and Mobile Fighter Gaiden: Gundam Fight 7th. The anime is available in English.
• Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: (1995 - 1996) It inspired an Gundam Wing: Operation Meteor OVA, Gundam Wing manga and Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists manga. The anime and manga are available in English.
• After War Gundam X: (1996) It inspired two manga series, one called After War Gundam X and one called After War Gundam X: Under the Moonlight.

• Turn A Gundam: (1999 - 2000) It inspired an animated film, Turn A Gundam II: Moonlight Butterfly and four manga series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: (2002 - 2003) It also inspired an OVA called Gundam SEED After Phase: In the Valley of Stars and a manga series. Both the anime and manga were released in the US.
• Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: (2004 - 2005) It also inspired a manga called Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge. Both the anime and manga were released in the US.
• Mobile Suit Gundam 00: (2007 - 2009) . It inspired a movie and OVA. The anime is available in the US.

Notable Gundam games released in Japan.

There have been tons of Gundam< games released in Japan, so if you search you'll have no trouble finding one. There are strategic, general action, shooting and fighting games all available and featuring your favorite mechas, and sometimes pilots too. To assist in your searches, here are some releases you may want to check out. They may be special because they're some of the first

Gundam games released, or they’re on region free systems. I tried to do my best to also look into which Gundam anime series each game corresponds to, but since I haven’t had the opportunity to watch much Gundam aside from the occasional Gundam Wing or Gundam Seed episode.

• Mobile Suit Z-Gundam: Hot Scramble (NES) - released in August, 1986 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Duel (SNES) - released March, 1996 and takes place during the Gundam Wing series.
• Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Zenpen Zeta no Kodou (Saturn) - released April, 1997 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series.
• Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senshitachi no Kiseki (GC) - released in March, 2004 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. Portable (PSP) - released April, 2007 and takes place during the Gundam Seed series.
• Gundam Suit Gundam: MS Sensen 0079 (Wii) - released in July, 2007.
• Gundam Battle Royale (PSP) - released in August, 2007.
• Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (DS) - released March, 2008 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 anime series.
• Emblem of Gundam (DS) - released in May, 2008 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team, Mobile Sit Gundam 0080, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 and Mobile Suit Gundam Z anime time period.
• Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Gundam Meisters (PS2) - released in October, 2008 and takes place during the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 anime series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam Senki Record U.C. 0081 (PS3) - released in September, 2009.
• Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next (PSP) - released in December, 2009 and features Gundam mechas from nearly every series.

NotableGundam games released outside of Japan

Fortunately, since Gundam is such a popular series, many of the video game entries have been released outside of Japan. In case you’re looking to experience the Gundam world in a whole new way, here are some of the more recent entries you can easily find in your local game store or at your favorite online retailer. Again, I’ve also tried to mention, when possible, which anime series each game corresponds to, in case there’s a particular Gundam series you love and want a game that is related to it.

• Gundam Side Story 0079 (DC) - released in April, 2000, and set during the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series.
• Gundam: Battle Assault (PS1) - released in November, 2000 and set during the Gundam Wing anime series time period.
• Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front (PS2) - released January, 2002 and takes place during Mobile Suit Gundam.
• Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo (PS2) - released August, 2001 and takes place during Mobile Suit Gundam.
• Gundam: Battle Assault 2 (PS1) - released in July, 2002 and takes place during the G Gundam, Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon (PS2) - released September, 2002 and takes place during Mobile Suit Gundam.
• Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space (PS2) - released in December, 2003 and contains suits from pretty much every Gundam anime series.
• Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Battle Assault (GBA) - released August, 2004 and takes place during the Gundam Seed anime time period.

I know I learned something - never decide to write a column on a series when you’ve only seen two segments (Gundam Wing and Gundam Seed), and haven’t watched one of them since high school. Ha ha. The high profile release on Xbox Live this week is an add-on to surprise RPG hit Borderlands, as Gearbox Software dares you to raid The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. It raises character level caps to 61. That’s right, this level cap goes up by 11. In addition to the new level cap, this add-on comes with new guns, class mods and vehicles. There are also new mission and enemy types. This game is an awesome fusion of the RPG and shooter genres, so if you’re a fan of either you should pick this up. The Secret Armory is 800 Microsoft Points.

Coming to Star Wars:The Force Unleashed is the Hoth Bonus Level. Apprentice Starkiller’s mission to kill Luke Skywalker (Spoiler Alert: He does not succeed) will take him to the hidden Rebel base on Hoth. You’ll infiltrate Echo Base, battle Rebel forces and for good measure, fight some wampas. Wampas on Xbox 360, that’s sci-fi nirvana right there. The Hoth Bonus Level is 800 Microsoft Points.

On February 25, 2010, FIFA 10 will receive the Ultimate Team add-on which challenges players to build the, well, Ultimate Team by collecting player cards. In addition to signing great players, you will need to watch the chemistry level of your team to succeed. This is the second year of the Ultimate Team add-on, which became popular enough that it spread to Madden this year. Unlike the free Madden Ultimate Team, the FIFA 10 version will run you 400 Microsoft Points.

Hitting the arcade on February 24, 2010 is Fret Nice, a 2-D platformer that asks you to defeat heavy metal bosses with “Riff Combos.” This Tecmo-published game goes for 1,200 Microsoft Points. Also coming February 24 is strategy game Greed Corp., which challenges you to some resource harvesting multiplayer fun. If neither of those games are for you, February 24 brings the chance to search for relics with Dr. Diggabone in Lazy Raiders. Dr. Diggabone or your Xbox Live Avatar can dodge traps and evil minions in the search for fame and fortune.

Coming to Games on Demand is PURE, an offroad racing game that challenges drivers to pull off tricks and extreme jumps. In this game it’s not enough to send your bike 1,000 feet in the air, you need to be standing on your handlebars when it happens. PURE will run you $19.99 and requires 4 GB of hard space.

The Xbox Live Deal of the Week is Duke Nukem 3D for 400 Microsoft Points. Duke Nukem’s fans probably have resigned themselves to the idea that Duke Nukem Forever is never coming out. Now you can relive the classic days of Duke Nukem with the added bonus of achievements. As the man himself would say, “Come get some.”

The press release that announced the street date and price of the DS XL also included several game announcements for Wii, DS and DSi, including WiiWare and DSiWare games.

Most of these include release dates but several simply note the season. The press release did indicate that these were for the first half of 2010, so expect them sooner than Christmas 2010.

Most notable are Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii, being released May 23, 2010, and a confirmation of the release of Metroid: Other M on June 27, 2010 for Wii.

Here are excerpts from the press release arranged according to system.

For Wii

• Super Mario Galaxy 2 (May 23, 2010 , Wii) The game includes the amazing gravity-defying, physics-based exploration from the first game, but is loaded with entirely new galaxies and features to challenge and delight players. On some stages, Mario can pair up with his dinosaur buddy Yoshi and use his tongue to grab items and spit them back at enemies. Players can also have fun with new items such as a drill that lets our hero tunnel through solid rock.
• Metroid: Other M (June 27, 2010, Wii) Developed for Wii through a collaboration by Nintendo and the world-renowned Team Ninja, launches June 27. The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran’s past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages.
• Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri (April 20, 2010, Wii) The game lets players customize their character, armor and weapons in order to protect a town from majestic monsters as that town rebuilds following a devastating earthquake. Online play will be available for all players with broadband Internet access at no additional cost. Online text chat is fully functional and online voice chat is enabled using the Wii Speak microphone, which is sold separately. At a suggested retail price of $59.99, limited quantities of Monster Hunter Tri will include the new Black Classic Controller Pro, while both Black and White versions of the controller will be available separately at a suggested retail price of $19.99. The game will also be available without a controller at a suggested retail price of $49.99.
• Sin and Punishment: Star Successor (June 7, 2010, Wii) From developer Treasure. The game features nonstop action with two playable characters and international online leaderboards to track high scores. Using the Wii Remote pointer functionality, the game offers unprecedented precision in the shooter genre.
• FlingSmash (Wii) for Wii will test players’ Wii Remote skills as they bounce a ball-like hero through countless side-scrolling stages, combining the precision of racket sports with the unpredictable fun of pinball. Playable only with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, the game will launch this summer.
• Disney Guilty Party (2010, Wii) First collaboration between Disney Interactive Studios and its recently acquired studio, Wideload Games, will be a Wii-exclusive mystery party game.
• Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (May 18, 2010, Wii, DS) By Ubisoft.Boasting amazing graphics with fantastic action and puzzle-solving game play, the Wii version will be the first in franchise history to feature a two-player cooperative experience. As an added bonus, the Wii version of the game will exclusively include the 1992 Super NES version of the original Prince of Persia game.

Spy this Valentine’s Day treat . Published February 14, 2010,  Rhoulette of the FragDolls put up a list of “Games Industry Women to Know 2010.”

It’s a phenomenal list of developers (including Amy Hennig of Naughty Dog, who just launched Uncharted 2), journalists (Leigh Alexander of Gamasutra), design professors and the like. It’s a really great reminder that while the industry looks fairly male-dominated, there are plenty of women making, writing about and teaching the art of games.

And it was a list in a major game industry magazine!!! I am still baffled. In the midst of my initial shock, I could name at least a dozen women off the top of my head who would vie for a spot on any Game Industry Top 50 list, so it’s impossible for me to comprehend how the compilers of that particular list did not manage to think of a single one.”
