Xfire and World of Warcraft surpasses 8 million subscribers

Xfire reaches 8 million subscribersXfire and Blizzard Entertainment is bursting with joy that they have passed their original goal of 8 million subscribers with more than 100 online games supported. It’s much more than a community and data collection tool, it’s also an online instant messenger and more.

Unlike other IMs, players can send and receive messages from inside their games without having to minimize (Alt+Tab) the game window. The messages appear right on screen: just hit Scroll Lock + X to respond.

Have you ever made taken down your enemy with only one shot or wanted a shot of yourself dancing on the bones of your fallen enemies? The Xfire program allows players to take screen shots by pressing Scroll Lock + S and automatically upload them to their profile page for the community to see.

According to statistics posted on Xfire’s website, more than 60% of Xfire’s users are based in Europe, with around 40% in North America. The company has logged more than 120,000 human-years of data since online multiplayer began outperforming traditional offline games.

According to details-based activity during the month of August 2007 (taken almost entirely from PC game-playing data), World of Warcraft logged more than 440,000 hours of gameplay on average per day followed by Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer at 173,355 logged hours and Counter-Strike: Source at 158,714 average hours.

The second busiest popular MMO logged on Xfire was Guild Wars, logging an average game play hours of 59,199 per day while Eve Online was sixth most popular and Lord of the Rings Online came in 8th.

Eve Online and Lord of the Rings Online have both outperformed Asian Online games Silkroad and Maplestory and a Korean free-to-play titles as they make the top ten among Asian Xfire users.

Currently, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne was rated most popular strategy game among Xfire users logging in 41,242 gameplay hours a day followed by Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction with 12,502 hours in the Miscellaneous category.

Xfire is free to download and is easy use. The program also allows players to see when their games are online as well as what game they are playing and even join in their friend’s game with one click.
