Xbox Live to offer social network service
Social networking sites have grown a lot in popularity during the past year and are rapidly becoming one of the most visited sites on the Internet. This service offers the possibility of staying in touch with friends, getting reacquainted with old ones or even meeting new people by adding them to your list of friends.
With more than 8 million users of its Xbox Live service, Microsoft didn’t want to be left out of the social networking action. The company is improving its online network functionality and offering a similar service for the Xbox 360, starting with the Fall Dashboard Update.
With this new service it will be easier for Xbox Live users to expand their network of friends as it will allow them to check out other user’s friend lists and interact with those people through messages, game invites or just compare achievements. The service will also allow for users to add those people to their own list and it will feature security settings so that users can allow or restrict people from checking their list.
This sounds like a smart move from Microsoft due to the popularity of social networking sites, but most of the users registered on these are young people so it may all be some kind of fad. In the case of Xbox Live, it may prove to be more useful because the service is mostly based on connecting with others and playing and interacting with them so I think a service of this nature makes sense. Microsoft has done a good job with its online service so far so lets hope they keep on improving and coming with new and fresh ideas.
