The land of the stiff upper lipped has officially received its long-awaited Xbox 360 price cut. Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 would be cheaper, effective August 24, 2007, to coincide with the launch of the title Bioshock.
Both the Core and Premium versions will be cheaper at £179.99 and £249.99 respectively, making the Core 360’s price identical to the Wii’s. This should appease the Brit gamers who were sobbing about not getting a 360 price-cut along with the US. There is more in store for them as the Xbox Elite will also launch on Friday, August 24, 2007, at a lower than expected price point of £299.99.
Microsoft hopes to woo more mainstream and first-time gamers with these lowered prices. It feels that the Core, at its extremely cheap price, will be ideal for gamers looking to taste high-definition gaming at an affordable price. while the the repriced Elite should entice “casual and experienced gamers and families.” Stephen McGill, head of Gaming and Entertainment, Xbox UK, did not forget to trumpet the fact that Microsoft pioneered multiple products for multiple categories that appealed to different groups of people.
This latest development should keep the gamers across the Atlantic happy for now. Microsoft has cut prices across two major territories from one big-daddy-game launch day to another. A big question still looms, however: Will this price-drop translate into substantial sales? Wait for the answer, don’t be concerned about it, just game on.
