The Xbox 360 was the first console to boast next generation graphics when it launched in 2005 and, four years later, the Xbox 360 is stronger than ever.

The original Xbox saw its successor after it spent four years on the shelves. That won’t happen this time according to Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division. He told the Mercury News that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony systems will more than likely have longer life cycles than previous consoles.

Microsoft isn’t focused on introducing the most powerful and pretty console as much as it is interested in getting as many users as possible signed onto Xbox Live. The ailing economy also has an effect in determining when to bring a new console to light. Bach says that consumers are very value conscious right now and Microsoft wants to be well positioned for when the economy bounces back.

Sony has already stated its PS3 has a 10-year life cycle much like the PSP and its previous system, the PS2. Nintendo announced that a follow-up to the Wii is in the works but more than likely won’t be introduced until Wii sells start to dwindle.

By the looks of it we won’t be seeing any new consoles for many years.
