WTF: Dance Dance Revolution: The Musical with “barely-clothed young actors and buckets of free beer”

by Kris Rosado on Nov 15, 2008 at 05:44 PM

Dance Dance Revolution

An interesting report from GameCulture informs us that the next adaptation of video games in the mainstream will be through - gasp - musicals.

Wait, do musicals count as “mainstream?“

The point is somebody has taken the liberty to bring a the idea of video games to the stage, though it’s probably not the game you would expect it be (sorry fanboys of alien shooters and twisted plots involving Metal Gear). The game chosen is Konami’s rhythm game, Dance Dance Revolution.

According to the report, Les Freres Corbusier has created a musical experience that is described in the playbill only as this:

Les Freres transforms the Ohio Theater into a fully immersive, bombed-out discothèque as it fuses unmerciful Japanese rave music with deeply regrettable sophomoric comedy in the futuristic dance spectacular, Dance Dance Revolution.

Riffing on fizzy dance musicals like Flashdance and death sport movies such as Rollerball, Dance Dance Revolution: The Musical is set in an Orwellian society where dance is illegal. A group of local street toughs harbor no hope of overthrowing the fascistic no-fun government — until a mysterious dance prophet named Moonbeam Funk arrives.

I’ll give you a second to finish your shocked blinking.

Dance Dance Revolution the Musical will hit the Ohio Theater in New York City from December 3, 2008, to December 20, 2008. Those of you who are interested in attending can purchase your tickets here. For those of you on the fence about attending here’s some more info that might help you make up your mind:

Loosely inspired by the wildly-popular video game, Dance Dance Revolution is like Footloose set in the future - but kind of scarier, and with 40 really attractive, barely-clothed young actors and buckets of free beer.

Is free beer worth sitting through Flashdance meeting Japanese rave? Only one way to find out.
