Women in the game industry still a minority

by Danielle Riendeau on Nov 9, 2008 at 08:28 PM

Woman gamerI was just opening up a newspaper in my old hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, this weekend and what did I see? A feature on women employed in the videogame industry. Since this happens to be a topic I have an invested interest in, I devoured it whole.

It has the hallmarks of many articles written about the generally male-skewed industry, which reportedly employs men over women at a factor of five to one (yuck, as usual). And it does delve into the usual reasons - the frat-boy stereotype of game companies (especially the ones that host strippers at hiring parties), the usual gender bias in technology industries, etc. Though the article does end on a hopeful note - that many more women are working in the field (which has obviously grown tremendously since the early days).

It’s worth a read to take stock of the current situation. Ladies, we need to keep on going in this industry.
