Here’s a quick look at his list:
5. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) - Yep, the blue speed demon has had his own comic book series for 15 years. That’s far longer than anyone has been able to play one Sonic game. An issue was even give away this year at Free Comic Book Day.
4. Captain N: The Game Master (Valiant) - I never read this one but, as the writer notes, it seems to have included some pretty good game tie-ins including Mother Brain from Metroid, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Megaman, King Hippo and Kid Icarus.
3. Street Fighter II (Udon Entertainment) - Maybe this vote was for the art since most of the Street Fighter stories - in any media - were not very enticing. BTW: Udon Ent. has one of my favorite T-short logos of all time - a bowl of udon.
2. Nester’s Adventures - If Charlie Brown was genetically combined with Calvin & Hobbes and addicted to videogames, you’d have a good idea of the look of the art in these comics. The author seems to have taken a small liberty here and favored the strips in Nintendo Power more than the comic book.
1. Penny Arcade (Dark Horse Comics) - Gabe and Tycho star in these sarcastic jibes at videgames. Clearly one of the best webcomics that also was successful enough to allow the creators to launch the Penyn Arcade Expo (PAX), going on right now in Seattle, WA. Since these are a simple rerun of the webcomics, I’m not certain this can really count here. OK, it is a published work filled with dead trees, which seems to be the criteria. These guys also had a Free Comic Book Day offering, but a couple years ago. Oh yeah, check out my review of the book that was in part of my second “Summer Reading” column for CiN Weekly.
As most writers, Warmoth declares his the “definite” list, though I’ll leave that determination up to you. I did notice that PvP wasn’t included here, though that has some questionably funny humor in it. This gives me another chance to give a nostalgic nod to Flash #304 not because it was a great videogame book, but that it featured the craziest videogame inspired villain, Col. Computron.
