Witchblade coming to theaters in 2009

by Christopher Buckner on May 28, 2008 at 09:08 AM

witchbladeMarc Silvestri, the owner of Top Cow Comics confirmed last week on his MySpace page that Top Cow’s popular heroine Witchblade is coming to the big screen in 2009.

Filming for the comic-to-film adaption of Witchblade is scheduled to begin September 2008. So far, Platinum Studios the developers of the film are planning for a 2009 release. A cast has not yet been announced yet but it looks like Michael Rymer, mostly known for his work on Sci-Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica, will be the film’s director.

Witchblade has already had some success on the small screen. The 2001 TNT series of the same name, which stared actress Yancy Butler, ran for two seasons. Unfortunately, TNT canceled the show before the third season was to begin despite the show having strong ratings.

More recently, Witchblade made it across the Pacific where it was turned into a popular anime series. Even though the anime has little to do with the comic book, North American comic fans have since embraced the heavily stylized Japanese adaptation.

Platinum Studios have also released the first official teaser site for the film.

Top Cow’s first motion picture, Wanted, is due to hit theaters this Summer (June, 12, 2008). The film will star Angeline Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy.
