It should come as no surprise is that HD won’t be a major new release but rather a stepping-stone to a truly next-gen Wipeout title, slated to arrive sometime in 2008. The game will support an online multiplayer mode and, possibly, a number of HD-enabled tracks from the upcoming Wipeout Pulse game on the PSP (currently a September 2007 release).
This isn’t the first popular Playstation series to get a quickie PS3 update while the full-featured iteration stews in development – both the Tekken and Socom series have received similar treatments for Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Socom: Confrontation.
This tactic may temporarily alleviate some of the pain PS3 owners are currently experiencing over the slow trickle of quality releases but this strategy can’t work forever. On the other hand, the promise of blazing fast Wipeout online in 1080p might just make the wait for the real thing more tolerable.
