When Nintendo revealed that the Wii Speak Channel would be enabled through a one-off download ticket, consumers and retailers were a little disgruntled. Like most Nintendo peripherals, a lot of them are impulse buys that eventually make their way to the used game accessory bins in mom and pop shops or re-sold in GameStop’s plastic baggies all over the world.
Now, however, disgruntlement can be set aside as Nintendo as seemingly changed their minds about the one off download ticket system. According to Wii Fanboy, Nintendo of Europehas made the following statement regarding the download tickets:
That essentially means you can buy a used version of the microphone and get your own Wii Speak code.
Wii Speak was introduced with Animal Crossing: City Folk as a bundled in accessory but is also sold separately. The accessory is basically just a microphone that sits on top of your television and will enable players use voice functions in supported games, chat in the Wii Speak Channel, and even let players leave voice messages. The Wii Speak Channel itself is just a chat room that uses Miis to lip-sync conversations.
While I completely understand why Nintendo came up with the downloadable ticket idea in the first place, I can’t see why they decided to actually put it to the test on hardware. Was combating resellers really worth creating a hassle for future adopters Nintendo?
