Heavy Rain is an upcoming action-adventure game for the PS3 that plays very much like an interactive film. It is developed by Quantic Dream, the minds behind the 2005 game Indigo Prophecy.
New information about the game was revealed on the latest episode of GameTrailers TV as well as 1UP We’ve taken the liberty of summing up those interviews to tell you everything you need to know about about Heavy Rain.
The story of Heavy Rain revolves around finding a serial killer known as the Origami Killer. You take control of four characters in the game and follow their own unique paths. The characters won’t physically cross paths but their actions go a long way in determining the final outcome of the game. Heavy Rain‘s most unique feature allows each playable character to be killed but this won’t result in a game over screen. Quantic Dream wanted to make dying a part of the game that encourages players to accept the consequences of their actions. It also increases the overall replay value of Heavy Rain because chances are the experience won’t be the same the second time around. There will be multiple save slots for those who might want to go back to correct a mistake but Quantic Dream would prefer it if we play the game the way it’s meant to be played, by accepting the repercussions of our actions.
One of the two characters we’ll be able to play as is a FBI profiler named Norman Jaden. He uses special glasses that brings up the A.R.I. (Added Reality Interface). This lets Jaden analyze evidence in real time. The other playable character is a reporter named Madison Paige. She wants to find out information that will lead her to the identity of the Origami Killer.
Even though Heavy Rain is played out through a lot of quick button presses, Quantic Dream stands by the fact that it’s still a videogame. We will be able to move around the environment and interact with objects and characters. For example, opening a door requires the right analog stick to be turned in a circle. If a non playable character has something they need to speak to one of the four main characters about, a prompt will appear on screen. Some Sixaxis motion controls will also be sprinkled into the game.
Heavy Rain is looking to be massive with more than 2,000 pages of script. It doesn’t have a release date yet but it will be present at E3 2009. It will almost certainly be rated Mature because the developers have confirmed nudity, sex and a serial killer in the game.
