Fans of driving games, Vin Diesel movie buffs and Midway’s creditors are all eagerly anticipating the release of Wheelman, an open world driving game initially slated for a February 2009 release. Diesel lends his voice and likeness to the game’s main character, charged with a number of driving missions that don’t all appear legal.
Kotaku reports that Midway has pushed the game’s release date back to March 20, 2009. A demo of the game is coming to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, though no definitive date has been announced for that demo.
Provided Midway is able to stay financially solvent long enough to release this game, it actually looks promising. The inclusion of Diesel, star of adrenaline-charged action flicks such as XXX and The Fast and The Furious, ensures a heavy dose of testosterone. Diesel’s character must infiltrate the criminal underworld and complete missions using some exaggerated video game physics. You use cars as weapons and can quickly acquire a better vehicle for the job by means of the “air jack,” in which you jump from your car into another one, tossing the driver into the road. Another special move, the “cyclone,” allows you to spin the car around 180 degrees and shoot into enemy cars.
It’s well-known that Diesel is a big video game fan and has referenced as much in his movies. In XXX, he advised a police officer to start “thinking PlayStation.” This game could also be a good career move for Diesel because if it’s successful enough to get made into a movie, he would surely have an inside track on the lead role.
