Valve clarifies Xbox Live’s Portal expansion

Reports last month of additional content to paradigm-busting, platitude-eliciting puzzler Portal were heart-stopping revelations for die-hards Valve fans.

But, according to GameSetWatch, Valve’s Doug Lombardi said the new levels for Portal will be culled from the Portal: The Flash Game map pack. While there’s still plenty of reasons for console players to be happy, there are now a few to get riled up about, too.

For example, returning players have to pay for what has been on PC for months in one form, although the entire original game will be included with purchase. And, in another form, the expansion is probably something they’ve already played on a browser. And, contrary to earlier reports, the new levels will have no GLaDOS voice-overs and, thus, none of writer Erik Wolpaw’s charm.

It appears the only reason for the release is to make the game available as a download on the console. That would be an admirable step in the eyes of hermits if it weren’t so darn late in the game. The original game was released October 2007.
