Madden NFL 08 might look stunning on the Xbox 360 as compared to the PS3, but that won’t be true of all games. Mark Rein, President Epic Games, has said that the Xbox 360 version of its upcoming game Unreal Tournament 3 will have less game content than the PS3 version. He, rather helplessly, attributed this to the comparatively small size of the DVD. On the other hand, the PS3 version won’t be hampered by the disc size because the console’s spacious Blu-Ray capabilities. The Blu-Ray Disc is very accommodating at five times the size of a DVD.
Unreal Tournament 3 on the 360 will most definitely have fewer maps, in spite of Epic’s efforts to compress the game content. Rein even hinted that the PS3 version after UT 3 might just feature an entire BD-full of game content.
Rein’s comments should serve as an eye-opener for Microsoft. It will have to look at alternatives if it is to find a fix to this DVD-size quandary. Perhapse future 360 games can go the way of the PC and be released on multiple discs.
Sony might have heaved a sigh of relief after Mark Rein’s statement, seemingly spending plenty if time warding off claims that the PS3 hasn’t lived up to all the hype surrounding its powerful technology. The tide may be turning for the PS3 although the competition seems to be for the runners-up spot while Nintendo happily looks down from the mountain top at its entangled, battered rivals.
