Sony’s current generation console was launched in the UK on March 23, 2008. ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch told MCV that the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 for the past month in the UK, though both consoles were neck-and-neck during the holidays. The PS3 sales in UK certainly showed an upwards trend after the release of the cheaper 40 GB PS3 on October 10, 2007. In fact, Sony hit a purple patch during the holidays, when the PS3, PS2 and PSP sold 1 million units each across all PAL territories in December 2007 alone.
David Reeves, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe had, in an earlier interview with MCV, went as far as predicting that the PS3’s European base will go past Xbox 360’s by the end of Summer 2008. The PS3 looks pretty strong in Europe and, most certainly, Japan as compared to the Xbox 360.
Microsoft would want to guard Xbox 360’s lead over the PS3 in Europe as the 360 remains abysmal in Japan, and the competition in North America is going to only heat up.
