French game publisher Ubisoft already has a strong presence in Asia with two of its 17 internal development studios housed in China. Now it has opted for Singapore as the location for its new internal development studio. The publisher plans to gradually increase the staff strength at the studio, which is under construction, to 300 employees.
The developers at this studio will be entrusted with the development of both handheld and console games after they complete their training period. Ubisoft has given the reigns of the studio to Oliver de Rotalier who previously was the company’s director of cost control for international production studios.
The publisher decided in favor of Singapore as the location for the new studio due to its technological infrastructure, the great shape of the local development industry, the high standards of its universities and training institutes, and government support.
Having offshore studios is not only a cost cutting exercise but also an effective way of tapping local talent. In that sense Singapore is an ideal location, for training institutions there keep on churning talented industry professionals. Also it is strategically placed, so Ubisoft can easily have access to game development talent in nearby countries like India and Philippines while it still enjoys the state-of-the-art technological infrastructure in Singapore.
