Gamers that have been trading in games to GameStop, Blockbuster and similar stores will be pleasantly surprised at some of the deals Toys ‘R’ Us is offering in its rookie year of game trading.
A $60 game purchase commonly garners between $20 and 25 in trade credit if one were to take it back the following day to most stores. Toys R’ Us is offering a whopping $41.50 in trade for the PlayStation 3 version of recently released racer Dirt 2. The mega hit Batman: Arkham Asylum will net you $43.50 on PS3.
Shoppers who scope for the best opportunities to “flip” games for big boosts in credit by trading them in between retailers can be forgiven for foaming at the mouth.
Blockbuster’s GameRush stores used to give between $30 and 35 for “Most Wanted” games but, as that chain has encountered financial difficulties, they’ve gone to a $20-25 max for trade-ins.
Being able to trade a game for two-thirds of the original purchase price changes everything we’ve ever come to accept about game buying. It’s certainly worth wondering what other retailers will do to counteract this.
The biggest winner in the battle that’s about to ensue? It’s definitely the consumer.
