Toshiba’s latest line of laptops, the Satellite X205 series, are targeting gamers with dual hard drives, a 17 in. widescreen display, four built-in speaker, 255 MB dedicated video RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT graphics card.
The craziest part of this laptop is that there are not any ports on the back, making it easier to unplug for transport. All of the ports (except for maybe power, though it is hard to tell from Toshiba’s images), are on the sides, which also allows for shorter keyboard and mouse cables. Of course, you could also use the built-in Bluetooth but I haven’t used a Bluetooth mouse with great response time.
There are also built-in CD and DVD controls, just above the keyboard, apparently for the downtime when you are not partaking in a LAN party or WOW marathon. The keyboard also includes a full number keypad, so you won’t have to perform any wrist twisting to press letters and numbers at the same time.
The built-in speakers are by Harman Kardon and include one subwoofer or the laptop may be connected to external devices using HDMI or S/P DIF audio cables for 5.1 Dolby Home Theater surround sound. They look pretty tiny, so I’d still suggest bringing your favorite headphones.
According to the press release, the laptop includes flash-based intel tech that “reduces the time it takes the Satellite X205 to boot, launch games and multimedia applications as well as return from hibernation mode,” though I’d prefer to see that in action, especially when waking up the computer that’s hibernating a truly graphics-intensive game.
The X205-S9349 model starts at $1,999.99 and the Satellite X205-S9359 (which really just has better graphics memory - 511MB - and larger hard drives - two 160 GB drives) starts at $2,499.99. Both currently available X205 series laptops are DirectX 10 compatible and come with the “Flare Carmine” (aka shiny black and red) lid and a built-in webcam.
