Top ten lesser-known romantic couples in video games
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it reminds me of the romantic couples I’ve found in the video games I’ve played over the past years.
This is my top ten picks for the most romantic couples I’ve found while playing these games regardless of the genre or game, even if it was only a fleeting moment in a game’s time line.
I avoided obvious couples like Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X and Squall and Rhinoa from Final Fantasy 8 and, instead, opted for lesser-known couples that seem to pass us by when we play.
If you have a lesser-known couple in your list feel free to list them in the comment box so their names will be known. Happy Valentine’s Day and enjoy the list.
Warning: This list may contain spoilers.
10. Johnny Sasaki aka “Akiba” and Meryl Silverburgh in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami.
Nothing can be more romantic than to have the one you admire most ask your hand in marriage during the heat of battle in the final moments of what could be your last day on earth. Kudos to Johnny the team’s trap expert who has been following Meryl ever since she knocked him out and stole his uniform (boxers and all) at Shadow Moses in the first Playstation installment of Metal Gear Solid. Now that’s devotion.
9. Nero and Kyrie in Devil May Cry 4, developed and published by Capcom.
Who cares if he may potentially be half demon? He’s hot and the guy next door is not. Besides, what girl doesn’t want a boyfriend who would sacrifice his own life, sanity and social status to save her from the clutches of an insane priest and his minions from hell? Am I right girls or what?
8.Jurio and Chris in Legend of Heroes III: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch, developed by Falcom and published by Namco Bandai Games.
Jurio, a quiet young boy, and his best friend Chris, an outspoken tomboy, realize how much they care for each other while embarking on a right of passage journey into adulthood by following the trail of the moonlight witch. As they reach each checkpoint they learn more than the history of the moonlight witch, they learn about each other in the process.
7. Henry Townsend and Eileen Galvin in Silent Hill 4: The Room, developed by Konami Team Silent and published by Konami.
In the darkness of the other world seeping from nearby town of Silent Hill, Henry Townsend finds light in the darkness through neighbor and love interest Eileen Galvin who he tries to protect from becoming possessed by Walter Sullivan. Even when she manages to creep him out during certain parts of the game he still loves her.
6. Jaster and Kisala in Rogue Galaxy, developed by Level 5 and published by Sony Computer Entertainment.
Classic story of boy gets swept off his feet by girl and falls in love. Except she happens to be the daughter of a space pirate who has confused Jaster for the Desert Claw.
5. Balthier and Fran in Final Fantasy XII, developed and published by Square-Enix.
They may not show it, but the loyalty and devotion for each other is there. You don’t need an expert to see how much they mean to each other.
4. Leon Belmont and Sara Trantoul in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence developed by Konami/KCET and published by Komani.
When his whip of alchemy failed to kill the vampire he’s forced to flee with his infected beloved. Sara volunteers to be sacrificed to fuse her soul with the whip and help Leon stop the curse from spreading.
3. Aya Brea and Kyle Madigan in Parasite Eve II developed by Square and published by Square Electronic Arts.
Though his intentions were mysterious he knew Aya was the girl for him ... even if she could set him on fire with a single thought if he ever crossed her.
2. Sora and Kairi in Kingdom Hearts developed by Square and published by Square Electronic Arts/Disney Interactive.
A simple childhood friendship blossoming into love as Sora sets out to reunite with Kairi and best friend, Riku, in a crazy adventure to rid the world of the shadows, mind the shadow heart and restore peace to the galaxy.
1. Valen Kesslar and Euphe Kalm in Dragoneer’s Aria developed by Hitmaker and published by Nippon Ichi Software.
After a dark dragon appears and destroys the academy where young Valen was just about to be knighted as part of his graduation he runs into a young blue-haired empath named Euphe who volunteers to help him protect the dragons. As they journey together the two begin falling in love with each other. When their relationship is questioned after revealing that she was the last surviving dragon he must protect. True love kept them together to the end.

I know this is an old post, but I did want to suggest a great game I barely heard of except by accident, which is Shadow Hearts - an older game that has a relatively recent sequel. The characters I’m talking about are Alice and Yuri. I deeply suggest looking into that story, I thought it was amazing. Besides, them the series people either love/hate I might also suggest is Xenosaga, with its varios love triangles with Jr. and Momo being my favorite.
