Three expansions coming to Final Fantasy XI in 2009

Final Fantasy XI Crystalline Prophecy

Players of that often forgotten MMO Final Fantasy XI will get to look forward to not one but three expansions in 2009, with the first one being released in Spring 2009 and,  according to the Square-Enix blog, additional expansions coming “every few months.” The expansions will cost around $10.00 each and will be distributed digitally on the PlayOnline Viewer.

For those new to the Final Fantasy XI universe, the PlayOnline Viewer connects players to the PlayOnline service, which is Square-Enix’s central hub for all its online properties. Here players can access additional content for their games, compile a friend’s list, etc.

As if to tame expectations of an epic expansion to the world, the Square-Enix blog describes the expansions as:

These three new expansions, however, will deepen the storylines running through pre-existing areas by ushering in all-new plots and intrigues. While not necessarily containing as much content as traditional expansions, these episodic scenarios are designed to take anywhere from one to two months to complete.

That’s not bad considering that World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion apparently only takes 27 hours to complete. One additional detail makes note of players being recommended to start the new quests at level 30 and finishing up around level 75.

A press release picked up by Joystiq details the new expansions as:

A Crystalline Prophecy - Ode of Life Bestowing
One day, a giant crystal appeared in the skies above Jeuno, triggering a series of unexplained happenings across the land. Now, adventurers will set forth to unravel the mysteries of this primordial crystal that holds the secret of Vana’diel’s past.

A Moogle Kupo d’Etat - Evil in Small Doses
It all started with an innocent drop of rainwater and a rickety, ramshackle Mog House desperately in need of repairs. Little did anyone suspect that this was only the beginning of a harrowing nightmare unheard of in the annals of moogle-kind.

A Shantotto Ascension - The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born
The eccentric Professor Shantotto returned to Windurst one day after a mysterious, unexplained absence, shocking her colleagues with behavior so outrageous it put her old self to shame! When she goes so far as to proclaim herself ruler of her own empire, adventurers set out to discover the truth behind her alarming shift in personality.
