THQ indicates de Blob will color again in (Wii?) sequel

by Jason Townsend-Rogers on Jan 26, 2009 at 03:10 PM

ded blob box artWith favorable reviews from sites (such as this one and that one), de Blob has succeeded in achieving a feat that few titles on the Wii can claim, and that is being a favorably-received third-party release. Considering that most Wii titles that are not developed by Nintendo tend to flounder, this is no small accomplishment. It should come as no surprise, then, that a sequel is inevitable.

According to Kotaku, THQ confirmed as much saying that the game received favorable sales of 230,000 copies from September to December 2008. While this figure pales in comparison to titles including Gears of War 2, which sold approximately two million copies upon its release, it bodes well in changing the perception that Wii games not developed by Nintendo are destined to be lost at sea.

Along with the fact that that de Blob managed to post favorable numbers for a third-party Wii game, the title even managed to sell more than Nintendo’s own Wario Land: Shake It. An achievement in itself, considering that the two games launched on the same day. Expectations usually dictate that Nintendo-developed platformers tend to dominate the competition in most situations. That this proved otherwise is extremely noteworthy.

In speaking with IGN about De Blob’s popularity, a THQ spokesman noted that, “We’re pleased with de Blob‘s performance worldwide… It’s a great intellectual property and you can tell your readers to expect to see more of de Blob in the future.”

Here is hoping that he remains true to his word.
