THQ patch addresses Smackdown vs. Raw create-a-wrestler mode complaints

Smackdown vs. Raw 2009
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 on PlayStation 3 has drawn generally favorable reviews, pulling an average of 78.6 percent on Game Rankings.  Now, THQ has released a patch addressing one of gamers’ big complaints about the game. The game’s Create-A-Superstar mode came under fire for forcing players to play through career mode in order to to upgrade each grappler they create. Now a patch available via the PlayStation Network will let you upgrade your future Hulksters with increased stats after only a single completion of career mode. Also, entering the code MAXCAS will give you increased attributes so you don’t have to repeat career mode, which hasn’t drawn much praise.

Also, players can now choose whether or not to add abilities they’ve unlocked to their new superstar. So if you’d rather be a hardcore foreign object master instead of a UFC-style tapout artist, that’s OK. Xbox 360 owners will have to wait a little longer for easy upgrades to created wrestlers,. THQ says the patch is expected to hit Microsoft’s system in “early 2009.”  The Smackdown vs. Raw franchise is like THQ’s version of Madden, an annual license to print large amounts of money. But Smackdown designers face similar pressures to those on theMadden series, wondering how to reinvent a sport in which the basic fundamentals don’t change from year to year.

One of the biggest changes to this year’s installment was the “Road to Wrestlemania” story mode. There was also a greater focus on tag team wrestling, including the series’ first ever co-op story mode. One of the notable features missing from this year’s game is the inclusion of legendary WWE wrestlers. That’s likely to whet wrestling fans’ appetites for the upcoming Legends of Wrestlemania, a game focusing exclusively on historic entertainers such as Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
