There can be only one Highlander (the game)

by Christopher Buckner on Jan 22, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Highlander the gameAfter five movies, two television shows, an animated cartoon, a Japanese Anime movie and numerous novels and comics, the Highlander franchise is finally coming to next-gen consoles in 2008.

Eidos Interactive has announced it is brining the highly acclaimed Highlander franchise to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. This will mark the first Highlander game released in more than a decade.

If you were expecting to wield the swords of either Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert in the original Highlander movies) or Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul in the 1990s Highlander TV series), then you might be unhappy. Or perhaps pleased, depending on your views of the two actors. The game will feature a new lead character named Owen MacLeod who isn’t directly related to the MacLeod clan but is, instead, a two-thousand-year-old warrior from Gaul (modern day France).

The game is being writing by David Abramowitz, the mind behind the original Highlander TV series, who promises that Owen is, tougher and edgier than both Duncan and Connor, having seen, killed and done more then both of them combined.

The game promises plenty of Highlander style swordplay with inspiration from Devil May Cry and God of War . Although set in the near future, the game will be told through flashbacks that tie into a larger storyline, with period-appropriate weapons -  Roman Gladius, Medieval Broadswords to the Japanese Katana - and opponents. Owen will acquire magic-like abilities that increase as more opponents are defeated and can use his immortality against his enemies, such as impaling himself on an enemy’s sword, to quickly disarm them. Settings will include ancient Rome, Scotland, Feudal Japan and futuristic New York City (much like the Anime movie Sword of Vengeances).

Unfortunately, if fans are looking for this game to finally put the entire Highlander lore in perspective, as the movies, shows, novels and comics have established several Highlander continuities, Highlander the game will probably not answer some of those unanswered questions. The world of Owen MacLeod is a new universe, but fans will certainly recognize the same emphasis on story and combat that has made the franchise so popular.
