After playing through the awesome/horrible Sonic: Unleashed last week (the short version - the running-as-Sonic parts are great, the brawling as a “werehog” parts are terrible), I went looking for a reason to care about Sonic again. I found it in Kombo‘s awesome list of fan-made Sonic games. All labors of love (and better games than the vast majority of Sega’s official titles), these games range from ground-up projects, remixed older titles, and bizarre, wonderful re-imaginings.
Among the coolest of the projects is Sonic Robo Blast 2, a fully 3D platformer built out of a modified version of the Doom Legacy Engine. Also, I’m planning on checking out Sonic Nexus and Sonic Forever, two completely new Sonic titles made with the look and feel of the old 2D glory days.
The most exciting project for more casual fans is the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD. When this puppy finally comes out (it’ll be awhile), it’ll be a fully HD version of one of the blue Hedgehog’s finest hours. Now that’s a reason to get hopeful again.
Check out the list for all of the titles, with links and means of downloading them. Trust me - you’ll feel much better about the little blue guy if you do.
