The ten year console cycle

by Danielle Riendeau on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:34 PM

PlayStation
Sick of dropping several hundred dollars on new consoles every couple of years? Well, this generation you might be in luck, since several industry leaders are predicting that the current crop of hardware will still be dominant for the next eight years. According to a post at GameDaily, Microsoft and Sony appear to have relatively similar game plans, with powerful systems - so powerful that even the most talented developers have barely scratched the surface of the technology. Nintendo has certainly taken a different path and company president Satoru Iwata made a few cryptic remarks regarding the big N’s plans.

From the post:

“Every hardware needs some revolutionary features,“ Nintendo President Satoru Iwata commented. “This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can’t tell. It’s natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different. If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it’s going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.“

Now, if only they would stop introducing six SKU’s for every piece of hardware (looking at you, Sony and MS!), I’d be a happy camper about only having to buy new consoles every ten years.
