The future holds fewer PS3 updates

Sony’s Playstation Director of Network Operations, Eric Lempel, stated in a recent MTV interview with Stephen Totilo that Playstation 3 owners will start seeing fewer firmware updates. Sony is looking to space out the updates in order to make things easier on owners. Plus with fewer updates, owners will be guaranteed to have important new features included in each one.

Lempel also pointed out that the download process for the system updates is gradually being improved. The changes at the moment are small, but Sony is working to try and make the update downloads faster and easier for owners. This new push for fewer and faster updates won’t really start taking effect until 2008, as yet another update is expected to be released before the end of 2007.

Maybe things would be simpler if they attempted to implement a PS3 update system that is more similar to the PSP method. If the updates could be included on games or on free discs in stores, as well as through downloads, it would be easier for PS3 owners to update.
