A couple guys named Ian and Brant Duncan have taken choose-your-own-adventures games to the next step and created one of the first live-action choose-your-own-adventure games called The Deepening.
In the game, a terrorist group has broken into a bank, is holding everyone hostage and has planted a bomb in the basement of the bank. You control the fates of the two officers set out to save the day; the by-the-book rookie, Stevenson, and the rebel, Bukowski. You make the choice between what they do and how they go about doing it, with each choice effecting whether or not they save the hostages or blow up in a huge fiery explosion.
The game is not very long with only four chances to make a choice but there are several choices for each path you take, so you will definitely want to play over again to try out the other outcomes. What makes it more interesting is, depending on who you choose, you get to see similar scenarios from different points of view. For instance, if you choose Stevenson, you get to see what’s going on at his end, and at times what’s going on on Bukowski’s side through Stevenson’s eyes.
And it’s all live action! The Duncan Brothers filmed clips of themselves acting out the action, and you see a different clip depending on how you play.
Everyone can play this game on their computer, Mac or Windows alike. It's not really a game but more of an interactive video so as long as your computer can show videos, you should be OK. You don't even have to download anything. So check it out, it’s fun little game to try out, and it’s free so you can’t lose.
The game is available on Atom, a website dedicated to funny videos and other media. Maybe we’ll see others like it soon.
