Around the Network

Sony has been putting a lot of muscle behind hyping up LittleBigPlanet. It is one of the big name titles that is going to be released in October of 2008. From what we’ve seen LittleBigPlanet prides itself on being a seemingly endless experience. Just about anything can be created and shared through the PlayStation Network. It’s also one of the first games to heavily rely on user-created content.
When I say anything can be created, I really mean anything. If you are creative enough, recreating scenes from your favorite movies or games is possible. LBP even allows for the creation of vehicles. Sure you could make a tank if you want but it’s even more fun to make a ten-feet tall walking hamburger that chases you through the level. (Spaghetti Monster Mobile anyone?) You can only imagine what kinds of wacky situations you and three friends could come up with when creating a stage.
Media Molecule coined the phrase “coopertition” when describing some of the unique stages. The idea behind this is getting from point A to point B while collecting the most bubbles. The problem is some obstacles along the way can only be overcome by working together. Thus a fusion of the terms cooperative and competition was born. There’s also been hints of your exploits being uploaded straight onto YouTube in the future.
LBP‘s look is very colorful and vibrant. From the moment you customize your Sackboy or Sackgirl, you’ll experience a world that’s miles away from the gray and sepia tones we’ve been seeing from other current gen games. If you’ve seen gameplay footage, you may be under the impression that LBP only goes from left to right. Basically a standard platformer. However the game actually is played within a 2.5D environment. You could move in a straight line, but you can also hop into the background and build things there as well.
One of the most unique things that can be done in LBP was shown during Sony’s press conference. Jack Trenton had to talk about financial things that usually bore anyone who’s watching. Instead of going with a PowerPoint style presentation that shows how great Sony is, a special LBP stage was created to provide some eye candy his presentation. It actually made listening about numbers enjoyable. No other game could have pulled this off so flawlessly. You can check out the Jack Trenton’s LBP presentation below. These reasons along with many others I’m sure I left out is why LittleBigPlanet is such mighty big deal.
