The best and worst careers for gamers

by Jessica Moen on Oct 2, 2008 at 06:37 PM
nerdygamersEveryone is looking for a new career, the main question is, which one is right for me?

Well, if you are a gamer, this can be especially difficult. How can I get a job when my necromancer is only level 12, and hasn't even learned undead protection yet?

Not to worry. I have created this little guide for you of the best and worst career choices for gamers.

Career: Doctor
Gameabiliy: Bad
Reason: At the office all day, when not at the office, you're on call. No free time. Unless you can write off playing Trauma Center as part of your "professional development."

Career: Cook
Gameabiliy: Good
Reason: You only work till the restaurant closes, if you own your own restaurant, you make your own hours. Plus when business is slow, you could pass the time with a rousing game of Cooking Mama.

Career: Lawyer
Gameability: Bad
Reason: Tons of cases, even more paperwork. Plus they're aren’t any games "challenging" enough for your ego.

Career: Teacher
Gameability: Good
Reason: Nights, weekends, and holidays off! I'm a Jr. High teacher! Aside from a few hours here and there for lesson plans and homework, I have plenty of time for my Oblivion obsession! Plus my kids love it when I bring video games into the curriculum.

Career: Principal
Gameability: Good
Reason: You have less free time than a teacher but will have tons of hardware with all the confiscated handhelds and games you will acquire from naughty students.

Career: Politician
Gameability: Bad
Reason: No free time. You're way too busy creating grants, fixing streets, spending taxpayers money, no video game time. And you' d be opposed to all the violence in video games anyway.

Career: Law Enforcement
Gameability: Good
Reason: Set schedule, you work for the government so you get plenty of sick days and vacation time. You could also play your PSP/DS while on those pesky stakeouts. Best part, you get police discounts at Gamestop. But I would avoid GTA and Saint's Row.

Career: Game Developer
Gameability: Not as good as you'd think
Reason: Sure, you're creating/playing games all day long, but by the end of the day you would be so sick of looking at them, you wouldn't want to play any on your own.

Career: Actor/Actress
Gameability: Great
Reason: You will have plenty of downtime. Working only once a year does that to you. However, that restaurant job might take away some of your gaming time.

Career: Circus Performer
Gameability: Good
Reason: You only work once or twice a year, minus your training. And you can play games in the tent while your waiting for your turn to perform! Elephants are surprisingly good at Rock Band.

Career: Superhero
Gameability: Terrible
Reason: You're way too busy fighting crime. Honestly, have you ever seen Green Lantern playing Nintendo? I don't think so.

Now you are ready to venture out into the world and find the perfect career for you, that won't interfere with you mastering your virtual Ninjitzu skills. If only more careers would realize what an important past-time gaming really is.
