The game caused quite an outcry from Americans, especially those directly affected by 9/11, and Taito, the creators of Space Invaders. Upon hearing of Stanley’s Invaders! exhibit, which Taito was not informed of, Taito immediately stated that it was going to end the installation and its unauthorized use of Space Invaders content. The company also stated that it would be willing to take legal action against Stanlet and the Leipzig Games Convention exhibitor which allowed the “Invaders!“ exhibit to run.
Stanley has since had his Invaders! shut down. He has since used his blog, AbstractMachine, to address his reasons for doing so. He has claimed that the reaction to his piece had ruined the effect he had wanted the exhibit to have on people, and also referred to the response by Americans to Invaders! as immature, unsophisticated and inconsiderate. The Computer Spiele Museum also issued a statement saying that they supported Stanley’s exhibit, and respected his choice in removing it from the museum.
