Summer 2008 PC and console videogame preview

by Christopher Buckner on May 5, 2008 at 09:06 AM

summer previewMuch like the movie industry started the season with the release of Iron Man, the game industry has already started off Summer 2008 on the sunny side with Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mario Kart Wii.

Typically this is the time of year when gamers have to sort through stacks of games lacking in quality and originality. Summer 2007 was a particularly low point in what was otherwise the most profitable gaming year in history. For Summer 2008, however, many high-profile titles should help make this am unusually more enjoyable season..

Here is a quick look at some of Summer 2008’s best-looking titles for consoles and PCs (with a few handheld ports).

Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360, PS3, available now)
You can’t talk about this summer season without first mentioning the first next-generation release of the world’s most popular and controversial series, that being Grand Theft Auto IV. Out now for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, GTA IV has in just week become the highest rated game in history, with nearly every review so far giving the game stellar scores. While there might be some early PS3 problems, so far fans have lined up for game despite numerous watch-dog groups warning against the sales of GTA IV. Online, GTA IV is already making waves, according to G4TV’s Xplay over the weekend, has already surpassed Call of Duty 4 as the new king of Xbox Live.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (PC, 05/20/08)
Many feel that if there is any game that might give World of Warcraft a run for its money, it might very well be Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. This MMO whose beta crashed many gamer’s computers over the spring, due to the overwhelming demand has already proven this game could have the muscle to give WoW a run for its money. A Xbox 360 version is also on its way but isn’t expected until later Q3 2008, possible Q4 2009.

LEGO Indiana Jones (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PC, PSP, DS, 06/03/08)
LEGO Batman (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PC, PSP, DS, Batman 09/01/08)
After LEGO Star Wars, the cute and friendly franchise has crossed over to Batman, which is due to be released on 09/01/08 and Indiana Jones which will be released first on 06/01/08. Both of whom will also be having film sequels Summer 2008 although neither of the LEGO games will feature story elements from the films. LEGO Indiana Jones will cover all three of the original movies while LEGO Batman will be a original story inspired by the long running animated series. Look for both games on all major handheld and consoles this summer.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of Patriots (PS3, 06/12/08)
Aside from Grand Theft Auto IV, it is Metal Gear Solid 4: Son’s of Patriots that will encourage gamers to buy a PS3. The last game in the popular series will pit Snake against his most powerful adversaries yet as he makes his first next-generation console debut. With amazing graphics and that same old deep story-driven plot we’ve come to expect, this Metal Gear looks to be the best of the twenty-one year old series yet.

Too Human (Xbox 360, 08/12/2008)
Too Human has been in development since the PlayStation One days, but it is the Xbox 360 that will be the home for Too Human come this summer. A mix of RPG and Action, Too Human will put players into the boots of the Norse god Baldur as they battle through a complete original world where man, monster and machine have become one. With a deep combat systems that is suppose to be on par with Devil May Cry, and a multi-level RPG elements, Too Human has the possibility to stand out as one of the greats of 2008. With more than a decade of development behind it, it better be as good as Silicon Knights claims.

SOCOM: Confrontation (PS3, 09/16/2008)
There is more reasons now to go out and pick up a PlayStation 3 these days and one of the best reasons to do so is for the upcoming PS3 exclusive, SOCOM: Confrontation. Unlike past games in the series, this first next-generation SOCOM won’t be a single player game, but instead borrowing from what 2007’s Warhawk did, releasing as a total online multiplayer game. Graphically this game looks to be the best in the series yet and will support upwards of 32-players at one time.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, DS, 09/16/08)
For me there is no other summer game I am looking forward more to than, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Not only will this game fill in some of the gaps between Star Wars Episode III and IV, but you’ll get to take control of both Darth Vader and his new dark apprentice, and unleash the powers of the Force unlike any previous game in the Star War franchise, while hunting down the last surviving Jedi Knights across the galaxy as you walk the line between pure evil, and good. With a new advance physics engine and amazing graphics, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will hit all major consoles late summer 2008.
