Street Fighter IV not coming to US arcades

Based on what I have seen of Street Fighter IV, it really looks like it will be successful in capturing that classic Street Fighter magic once again.

The trailers and screenshots for the game have thus far captured an experience that gameplay-wise appears to resemble Street Fighter II, but visuals-wise appears to be what would happen if Capcom chose to have a famous artist present his interpretation of their beloved product.

Gamers who have been looking forward to this title will be comforted by the fact that the title will appear on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 17, 2009.

As for the arcade circuit, however, Street Fighter IV will not place an appearance there, according to Capcom’s senior director of communications and community, Chris Kramer, as quoted by this article on Edge Online.

Of course, this news, while tragic, is not really surprising considering that it is becoming more difficult than ever to find a dedicated location to partake in arcade video game playing. Those small sections in bowling allies and some movie theaters appear to be the only places that house the final bastions of arcade gaming (and even they appear to be on their death bed).

This negativity towards the arcade scene only applies to the US. It is certainly not the case in Japan, where arcades are not only alive but thriving.

US gamers have thus far taken advantage of this by importing arcades from American importers that are willing to do so which is not always considered a wise idea.
