Stellar Spore Galactic Edition

by Jenni Lada on Jun 26, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Spore Galactic EditionSince people have had to wait so long for EA’s Spore, it seems only fitting that a special edition version of the game will be released on the launch date. The Spore Galactic Edition will feature the Spore game, along with a “Making of Spore” DVD, the National Geographic Channel’s special “How to Build a Better Being” on DVD, an “The Art of Spore” art book, a Galactic Handbook and a poster. It will be released on the same day as the original edition (September 5, 2008), but will be a bit more expensive.

The price is a bit of a mystery. The official press release states the Spore Galactic Edition will cost $79.99, and a quick peek at GameStop’s site confirms this. However, the EA Store shows the same product for $69.95. Perhaps this is an oversight, or maybe people who buy direct from EA will receive a deal. If you’re interested in the game, it might be worth checking out come September.

As you can probably guess, the DS version of Spore will not be receiving preferential treatment. That’s okay though, I’m sure most Spore players will want this game for their PCs and Macs, and not for a handheld. The handheld version of EA games like The Sims and SimCity always seem so forced and limited, and I’m sure Spore will be no exception.

One thing that’s a bit disappointing in the galactic edition is the apparent lack of the full creature creator.  The perks are nice, and I’m actually most likely gonna shell out the extra cash to get the galactic edition, but I’m always a bit irritated at EA’s decisions to make their frequent forays into micro-transactions.

Even EA marketing drone #TK421 knows that there’d be a huge uproar if they charged people per batch of creature enhancements, it seems like what they did was bundle up the potential transactions and sell it as a pre-marketing add-on.  Normally, I’m not this skeptical, but EA continues to push my buttons by thinking of gamers second, and themselves first.

I wish that almost any company other than EA did this game.  It’s a brilliant and fun game pushed out by a company who’s increasingly becoming retro-focused and who continually tries gamers’ patience.

That is true. I guess they’d assume people would already have spent the money to buy the Creature Creator to prepare for the actual game.

I know what you mean - as a Sims 2 fan I consistently find myself stunned that they charge $20 per a “stuff pack” filled with content people could find online for free from other users.

Plus you can’t forget their piracy measures as well, which often stopped games from working. (That was EA, wasn’t it?)

Yep, if I remember it was the Mass Effect (EA/ Bioware) phone home anti-piracy feature that required reqular verifications and would potentially limit the number of installations to (3 i think) which means for PC tinkerers like me, I could only install it a limited number of times.

It’s just a little irritating that I’d have to buy another piece of software before I buy the full game to experience how awesomely cool it’s gonna be.  Fortunately, EA doesn’t put out a lot of top notch games anymore, and the Sims, Spore… etc are the exceptions to the rule ;)

I thought so. I was pretty sure they were the ones with horrid DRM protection. :D

That is. Does the free demo version offer the ability to have creatures move from it to the full version of the game? If so, then that might help a little.

Yeah, EA’s game selection has been lacking. It is a shame, but at least their simulations (Sims 2, Spore) are still faring pretty well.

I dont know if the critters I’ve created will port over to the full game, but one of the things that amaze me is the percentage of locked vs. unlocked features in the free demo.  In some cases, the free version will only give you an estimated 10-20% of features available.

They should post to the full version, I’m pretty sure EA’s not THAT dumb.  Every other thing I’ve seen about the game, from the social network around the game and creatures, to the automatic upload to youtube.com is brilliant and very network focused (in my opinion, they should also upload to machinima.com since the Sims has and Spore will have a healthy and creative machinima following).
